Weeks 3 & 4 - Australian Open - Main Draw - Melbourne (Hard)

Very close, Harriet had a break point at 2-2* and one at 2-4*, but too good and too big hitting from Vekic. Croatian support was very big and very noisy.

Was never really in doubt but she made her work. Good effort.

Loses 4-6 6-0 6-2

Great showing by Burrage, just watched the highlights and some of her shots in set 2 were IMPRESSIVE! If she could sustain more of that, maybe her ceiling is a lot higher than I gave her credit. She must be chuffed with getting a win and making it close with a top 5 player. Nerves clearly hampered her when she got the lead, but how many times has she had matches like this? I can't think of many.

I dont think we could have asked much more from Jodie and Harriet. Especially impressed with Jodie. Well played both!

I thought Jodie played really well but more importantly I thought her attitude was spot on. She looked as though she was really enjoying it which is what you should do when playing a top seed on the biggest show court. She didn't beat herself up when she made mistakes or missed opportunities - just got on with playing the next point. If she can take that attitude forward there is no reason why she can't push on up the rankings. Great entertainment. Well played Jodie.

Last year's beaten finalist, the 22 yo Qinwen Zheng WR 5, has lost in R2 by 7-6(3) 6-3 to 36 yo Laura Siegemund WR 97.

I really like Qinwen's tennis but this result really made me smile smile

Glad to see that Jodie and Harriet made a match of it and didn't just cave in!

I echo the comments about the good showing Harriet and Jodie put up. I know Harriet can be gritty but I'm particularly pleased about Jodie's attitude. I believe Jodie can really push on up in the spring and summer

Not unexpected results for Jodie and Harriet but it sounds like they both put in very decent performances against extremely strong opponents.

I'm particularly pleased to hear Jodie stayed on an even keel. Her tendency in the past to have mini-meltdowns was definitely the main thing stopping her from rising as high in the rankings as her talent suggested she could go and we've spent a lot of time saying "If only she could get the mental side of her game sorted out!" There's a lot more evidence now that she's managed that!

Emma is playing the big points far better. Anisimova so aggressive and hitting winners for fun. Good game to watch

Emma wins the first set 6-3, having finally got the message that she needs to hit groundstrokes deeper if she's to put Anisimova under pressure

Did well to come through that given her hip problem.
Anisimova reminds me of Jodie Burrage in terms of style. Very clean striker of the ball, but very inconsistent.

Emma will need to be sharper against Swiatek and the amount of breaks against her serve is a worry, but she looks fit and fired up, and all in all, more reasons to be positive than negative. In any case, reaching the 3rd round is already a reasonable showing from her, and Swiatek has looked a little more vulnerable than normal, of late.

So many breaks of service in this match and twists and turns - at the start no-one could hold their serve and it was so close and long that Yastremska's match had completed before this one had even reached the end of the first set; both matches started at midnight, by the way.

Anyway happy for Emma and happy I can get some sleep before 3 am.
