Potential second round opponents

Sonay - Sabalenka
Jodie - Gauff
Katie - V Kudermetova
Emma - Anisimova

I think we want to be glad  that Katie has the older Kudermetova as a potential  second round opponent, rather than her younger sister who is rapidly climbing the rankings only losing  to Sabalanka in 2024,.

Early bet 365 R1 betting odds. 3 of our girls are favourites to various degrees ( Jodie very narrowly ) and Sonay is equal.

Katie 1/5 vs Rebecca Marino 7/2
Emma 8/13 vs Ekaterina Alexandrova 13/10
Jodie 4/5 vs Leolia Jeanjean 1/1
Sonay 10/11 vs Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 10/11

 Tennis abstract rates:

Katie 74% chance to win and then onto last 32

Emma 61% to win and lose round 2

Sonay 45% chance to win

Jodie 55% chance to win and lose round 2.

These betting amd tennis abstract figures are really pretty close for our women for R1 ( moreso than for the men )

Quite close wirh Katie and Emma, and kind of a toss up for the other 2.

I think Jack and Cam were actually quite close, Jake was the outlier - but Tenjis abstract chances will be impacted by lack of recent Nickplay taking his ELO level down, whereas the bookies are smarter than that!

Interesting that they think Emma will win R1 and then lose to a lower ranked opponent in R2. They must be basing that on age as Emma's 1st opponent is 30 and her likely 2nd one 23.

Its based on their ELO rating based in turn on wins and losses against other players and taking into account those opponents form

OK, that makes sense. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, assuming Emma gets that far.

Simon Briggs not very optimistic about British prospects He has Katie reaching the 4th round which would be a first for Katie in Grand Slams. He has Emma ,Jodie and Sonay all losing in the first round. Emma has certainly got one of the weaker Russians in the 1st round,

There is a report that Emma has a swollen hand and ankle after being bitten by ants. She said she is not taking any medication for it so as not to risk a doping ban.

I'm going for Jodie to win, as well as Katie

As a fan, I find it better to have low hopes for Emma - and then to pray

I've no idea what shape Sonay is in - it's true her opponent beat Katie Boulter at the US Open - but it wasn't very inspiring - so pretty 50:50, I'd think

In the doubles Liv and Teresa get a shocker draw against the third seeds Hseih/Ostapenko

Hev and Harriet will be on the opposite sides of the net in their opening round.

Sufficient entries in the doubles to warrant a separate thread - I'll start one

Hope someone advises her to use Apis Mel, homeopathic remedy.

Presumably still a chance of LL for Harriet, even if Emma pulls out ?
