Weeks 3 & 4 - Australian Open - Main Draw - Melbourne (Hard)

My gosh that was stressful reading your report Kundalini must have been awful watching. Fett has a history of throwing away close matches in big events, but thrilled for Harriet.

And sounds like Jodie was very solid. Great!

If it was there to be hit, Jodie went for it. Most of the time her execution was impressive, with just the occasional horror shot.

A bit untidy though good enough to take the 2nd set. Returning 2nd serves is still a big issue; looks great when she fires a clean winner but so many straight in the net. Fortunately for Jodie, Leolia was also struggling to keep 2nd serve returns inside the court; Jodie won 71% of her 2nd serve points, Leolia 57%.

Thanks for the report, kundalini. Sounds like Jodie was generally very positive in her game and kept going for it and being positive even when she didn't execute every shot well and it paid off. That's nice to hear and that was a far more comfortable result than I expected.

Also well done to Harriet for making the most of her LL spot, although I'm glad I didn't watch that match!

What lovely news to wake up to! Made up for seeing that Jack is close to going 2-1 down.

Wonder if Fett is still mentally affected by losing to Wozniacki from 5-1 up in the 3rd at this event some years ago. Doesn't seem to have been the same since.

Thanks for the reports, kundalini, great job

I was really sure that Jodie would win (kerching) - the way Léolia has been talking recently, she doesn't really believe in herself

I'd no idea that Harriet had a LL - am I wrong, she seems to get a lot?

Anyway, WHAT a nailbiter

But SO happy for her - those crunch matches, in these sort of events, can really make or break your season

Harriet looked like she might have been injured at the end - was hobbling coming into the net where Leolia gave her big hug (nice) - in which case even more props to her.

Harriet hobbling? Or Jodie? (Harriet was playing Jana, not Leolia - it's early in the morning, I'm with you smile)

I watched the end of Jodie's match, her power just overwhelming at times .. and a little of Harriet's match, towards the end .. very nervy. Both players trying to lose, Fett graciously, Dart less so. I'm not a fan of the racquet leaving the hand to release anger. She'd be better off stating in the moment. But apart from the taping no real evidence of Harriet's injury in her movement that I saw

Looking on Tennis Forum a number of posters mention Harriet barely able to walk at the end (It's TA so dramatic) clearly something was wrong.

Harriet got a last minute call up for the match so I imagine suffered a bit of cramp due to lack of pre match prep?

Super that Harriet got that LL spot and then went and eeked out such a win.

Her 100 ranking points here so far have her up from WR 112 to live ranked 96.

And well done Jodie too. Her 70 points so far have her up from WR 173 to live ranked 146. She has earned 351 points since she came back in September.

During the final tie-break Harriet kept flexing her legs, standing with hands on the wall lifting first one leg then the other.Whether it was cramp or the injury wasn't clear but she certainly had a problem. I also thought I saw a dark patch on the bandage on her leg.

Ahem, sorry. I meant Jana. All the Brits winning at the same time, I got very confused.
