But I think one of the problems is that the juniors' doubles event counts towards their overall ranking and this puts extra pressure on them (and their teams) for them to play

Yes I agree too that playing the 2 doubles the day before was unnecessary. In my mind she probably wanted to at least cover her points from last year to arrest the drop in her rankings. As you pointed out doubles count towards that ranking and last year she was runner-up.
This G1 event is just a warm up. The AO carries 3 times the points (and more in later rounds). Ideally a player would want to play 2 or 3 matches to get used to the environment and then move on to the main event while staying fresh.
