Boys & Girls: 2025 Australian Open, hard (Week 4)

Hannah v Maya Burcescu. Need to go to sleep now, but very impressed by these two 15 year olds. Shame the stadium is almost empty.

Hannah won that in three sets but very impressive win for Brooke in three sets also, over the 7th seed, what a run she is having

Brooke, and Hannah, join Mimi in the last 16 of the singles.

Hannah and Emerson were down and out in that doubles - 1-4 down in the second - but a double break out of nowhere gave them a run of 5 games to win the second set - and were down in nearly all the MTB - down 4-7 at one point, I think -  but came back to snatch it right at the end 10-8

Mimi & Brooke lost their doubles in a MTB

But excellent singles wins for Hannah and - in particular - Brooke

This is equal singles points for Hannah who lost in the last 16 last year

And, obviously, mega extra points for Brooke

So impressed by Brooke Black's improvement at this level. With all the young guns, she's been flying under the radar. I don't know anything about her background, but seems a prime candidate for the college route.

Brookes dad is wayne Black, a well known Zimbabwe tour player from the family that included Byron and Cara. Her mum was Irina Selyutina (from memory, may have spelling or name wrong) who also played the WTA tour

And Irina had been Caras doubles partner on the tour as well, to keep it all nice and close - Wayne won the AO and USO mens doubles back in the early 2000s

Oh yes, I did know all that. I met Irina Selyutina/Black a few years back and remember talking to her about Brooke. The Blacks were quite the Zimbabwean tennis dynasty, and Cara Black and Irina were ITF junior world champions. Nature and nurture coming together.

Excellent singles wins for our girls. The US Open junior champion has lost and still we have three girls in the last 16. A good period for GB tennis.

And an impressive doubles result for Emerson and Hannah too over quality opponents in Vandromme and Pohankova. Hoping that Hannah doesn't have any after effects from last week's retirement.

I caught the end of the doubles, they were definitely down and out but I thought Hannah did a great job in hyping Emerson up and it looked like they were having fun. I watched Hannahs singles earlier and she was very lucky to get through, she took a medical time out at the end of the second set - I think it was related to the heat and she looked liked she was really struggling - I thought she was close to calling it quits in the first game, but after the first few games pulled away.

Excellent news. The only nation with 3 girls through to the singles L16 and, as 9vicman says, that doesn't include our reigning US Open champion.

On the positive side, the weather in Melbourne is a bit cooler until Saturday so assuming there is not massive humidity it should suit our players better.

I've just watched the replay and I was expecting far worse in terms of Hannah and the heat

It seemed to me she was playing very well, and moving pretty well - and she had plenty of chances to win that second set, right up until the very end, and then she was pretty down at the thought of another set

Obviously the medical team came on. And you can hear Hannah saying her legs feels heavy, and she'd taken all her fluids, but felt a bit bloated, didn't want to take the gels as she was worried they might upset her stomach, and felt a little spacy, which obviously isn't great

But the doc takes all her vitals and says that her temperature is fine, and her pulse is fine - can't hear about the blood pressure but they take it and presumably it's fine too - the two medics looks quite happy with it

And the doc in charge says that, from a safety point of view, he has no problem with her continuing

They give her some electrolytes, which is what she wanted. And tell her to put the icebags under her arms, and other places. And to keep jiggling her legs when she's sat down. And obviously to let them know if she feels dizzy or whatever.

And Hannah carries on for the third set and she seems a little sluggish at first, maybe until the electrolytes kick in, but pretty much fine from the get-go

And then she seems

The lead ITF article is on Hannah, who admitted the heat was causing her a problem, and she was delighted to hear that temperatures are due to drop around 10 degrees

So Jamie Mackenzie appears to originally come from Australia and has an impressive head of hair: https://www.redrockettennis.com/

Niels McDonald has a German first name.

Can anyone think of another doubles team whose surnames spell the name of a singles player (Mackenzie McDonald). Answers on a postcard...
