Week 6 - WTA 250 - Cluj-Napoca, Romania (indoor hard)

Hilarious

Emily App and partner were 1 or 2 points behind throughout the whole MTB

The other pair looked ultra solid

And then, after a couple of really crafty rallies, Em+ get back to 8-8

One of her opponents then dumps the easiest smash into the net

And the other one then hits a basic down-the-line shot miles wide

And it's game, set and match for Em (and partner)

Good result for Emily, I hadnt realised she had reached top 100. Wuth her game she could be a decent doubles player at the top level

 Good stuff.

Yes, Emily has been In the doubles top 100 since she made her previous WTA 250 SF, in Guangzhou at the end of October. This latest SF has her at live ranked 85 as against her CH 87.

Doing very well, though in the average ranking points per tournament played, in calcs I did for the Abu Dhabi thread, she is for now still some way behind our undoubted leading 3 doublers - Olivia, Harriet and Heather.

Average ranking points per tournament in the year to 03/02/25 for our top 5 WTA ranked players:

Olivia = 96.78, Harriet = 94.88, Heather 72.13, Maia = 42.00, Emily = 35.32 ( edit: actually 35.65 on recalc )

Emily is now going to push her average up a little bit this week with her at least 98 replacing 75.

Emily is bound to have a much lower average because she has played a lot more tournaments in the last 12 months that offered fewer points. Now that she is in WTAs more regularly that average should increase pretty rapidly.

The competition is rather tougher though !

Tbf doing rather well this week. Just there will very probably be more R1 exits.

FWIW, from Emily's overall tournament points average of 35.65 from 31 tournaments in the year to 03/02 :

She averaged 31.06 in 17 ITF tournaments up to W100 level.
She averaged 41.21 in 14 tournaments from WTA 125 level up, mostly in the second half of the year.

A fair few years ago, the tour rankings were based on average points with a minimum divisor of something like 12 events ie if you played 9 it still got divided by 12. Cant recall when that finished , in the 80s Id hazard a guess

Emily and Tang lost, in a MTB

Emily was not really firing on all cylinders and Tang has a really wild game of doubles - it was close but the others deserved it, overall

SF:- Emily Appleton (GBR) / Qianhui Tang (CHN) CR165 (87+78) lost to Magali Kempen (BEL) / Anna Siskova (CZE) CR234 (157+77) 5-7 6-4 8-10

So all four teams in WTA tournaments lost today, leaving just EWS as sole surviving woman (yet to play) in the W35 in Switzerland.
