Although most of us agree she should drop down to 250s, the problem with that is that the WTA have all but eliminated 250s. With the exception of the grass season and the Asian swing in October, there is only one 250 a month and I don't see Emma dropping down to 125s without a big fall in her ranking. There is also a series of 96 draw 1000s in the next couple of months that she will be required to play while her ranking is where it is. So it seems that it is pretty much 1000s and 500s for the next few months whatever any of us think is best for her progress.
But stop taking these ruddy MD WCs when she doesn't get in directly !!!
( though damage already largely done as we move to bigger MDs that she will get into but short of matches )

I think the bigger question is whether 500 and 1000 events will stop offering her this endless stream of WCs?
You can see the appeal from Emma's perspective - it would be tough to turn down these guaranteed opportunities to mix it against the best in the world, plus the knowledge that big points are on offer just for winning a round or two.
She knows she did incredibly well ranking wise last year from playing just a handful of events, because she managed a win or 2 in a few of these big tournaments and reaped the points rewards.
In some ways, Emma's extra marketability is perhaps playing to her disadvantage. Tournaments want her for the attention she brings, and few players would turn down the chance to play the biggest events on the circuit and go for a 125 instead.
She should've played quallies in both of these tournaments, if she got the 2 wins in quallies she'd come into the MD with a bit more confidence. Rather than coming in flat and getting another L.
It is a bit of a disappointing start to the year for many of our top ladies.
Must be cold there today. The doubles players are all wearing long sleeves and Liv is the only one not wearing leggings. Even the ballbots are wearing hoodies.

This AI is darn realistic now!
All we need is the real stuff - Starmer, Putin and Trump
Talking of mandatories reminds me that Katie will have to count a 0 point counter for the next 12 months with missing this tournament.
Will she?
She missed both the Doha and Dubai WTA 1000s last year and hasn't been carrying a mandatory 0. And both the live LTR and OER rankings are currently not reducing her total ranking points this week.
I certainly don't know the rules re minimum WTA 1000 appearances / counters and which ( if any ) are mandatory counters. Just that missing one ( or more ) doesn't necessarily mean a mandatory 0.
It's interesting to compare Emma's recent record with Bucsa's, who beat Emma recently. Bucsa had a run of losing in the 1st round of two successive WTA250s followed by a 1st round loss in a WTA125. Three 1st round losses in a row, the same as Emma now. Bucsa then reached the SF of her next tournament, another WTA125 and then played another WTA125 and won the final. Emma hasn't won a match since her heavy defeat by Iga. It does look as if she needs to follow Bucsa's example and play down in WTA250s and WTA125s for a few tournaments to get her confidence back.
