Talking of mandatories reminds me that Katie will have to count a 0 point counter for the next 12 months with missing this tournament.
Will she?
She missed both the Doha and Dubai WTA 1000s last year and hasn't been carrying a mandatory 0. And both the live LTR and OER rankings are currently not reducing her total ranking points this week.
I certainly don't know the rules re minimum WTA 1000 appearances / counters and which ( if any ) are mandatory counters. Just that missing one ( or more ) doesn't necessarily mean a mandatory 0.
Err, in the latest rankings she does in spite of my wonderful logic. Down 10 ranking points to 1921 points.
In as simplified a way as I can put it, as of last year, all players aged 18 and above who have a ranking at the entry deadline above the initial main draw cut off are required to play all Grand Slams, all WTA 1000s and 6 WTA 500s (or as many WTA500s as they would get in to if they wouldn't get into 6). Not meeting those requirements will result in a 0 point counter for each one not played. All 0 point counters must be included in the 18 tournaments on their ranking regardless of if the tournament is a mandatory counter unless they've not played for 8 weeks with an accepted medical condition in which case they then don't have to count the 0 points from WTA1000s and 500s. Complicated much?
Katie didn't have a 0 point counter last year as she wasn't ranked high enough to be in the main draw for Doha at the entry deadline.
But at the end of the day a couple of 0 point counters isn't a big deal on their ranking. The top 3 in the world right now have 9 zero point counters between them.
Actually the WTA 1000 requirements are iess complicated than I was imagining. The problem was really me not appreciating how much Katie had risen in the last year and that she simply didn't make the MD cut-off last year.
