Week 8 - ITF W35 Manchester, Great Britain - Hard - Indoor

I make it that Brooke has 4 points here, and 2 points from last week, so will now have 15 points in total (if she loses her R2 match here)

Which should put her right on the cusp of the top-1000?

PS Completely agree, emmsie - a couple of pop-up food stands would have been dead easy to get and a perfect coffee and fuelling option

Brooke's 9 ranking points at 17/02 already include last week's 2 points from Birmingham, it having been a W50. So her 4 points from here will 'just' take her on to 13.

Still, she'll surely smash into the top 1000 and go very much higher before too long. What a great effort today, so close

Emily's 8 ranking points so far here will take her up to around WR 380 as against her CH 348.

She will be provisionally up to GB #10, ahead of Ella, so may have 'Strongest Nation' responsibilities as regards her ranking

Looks like Holly has forgotten how to win at both singles and doubles - close matches but another loss. Wel done to our two juniors - it is a good win for them.

QF:- Julie Belgraver (FRA) / Holly Hutchinson (GBR) CR579 (288+291) [3] lost to Brooke Black (GBR) / Mika Stojsavljevic (GBR) UNR (1595+UNR) 6-1 3-6 6-10

*****

SF:- Brooke Black (GBR) / Mika Stojsavljevic (GBR) UNR (1595+UNR) v Ariana Arseneault (CAN) / Anna Rogers (USA) CR279 (136+143) [1]

 Thanks smile

Forgotten that.....

But, yes, a great effort - and very pleased for her that she won the doubles (with Mika) - deserevd something out of today

I'm sure that another half a dozen MDWC's wildcards will sort that for her!

Not played any ITF there since 2013 as no catering and they complained about the courts and lighting

I attended today. Catering utterly appalling. Limited to three vending machines for sweets and cold fizzy drinks-two operated with cash only. Was advised to go to the National Squash Centre cafe ten minutes walk away. This was scarcely any better and featured a young lady who took ten minutes to create a cup of instant coffee. The whole set up was distinctly underwhelming, Zero indication that the event was taking place. Only one court with seated viewing facilities. Like so many of the LTA indoor venues which are used for ITF events the whole thing was as low key as humanly possible. If only these centres could look at Shrewsbury where all the stops are pulled out to make a great experience for players and spectators alike.

Sorry to hear that Bagel, that is shocking! I would complain to the LTA because this is not good enough. I hope they can start to make improvements to facilities across the country. This is certainly not making tennis accessible!

QF:- Manon Leonard (FRA) WR185 [1] def Emily Appleton (GBR) WR394 [WC] 7-6(5) 7-5

Emily won't be too happy about that result - she served for both sets. Good scoreline just the same and shows that Emily is under-ranked.

 or that Manon is over-ranked

(SUCH an irritating game, and attitude on court)

A pretty poor second set, in particular

SO many balls going 6 inches long throughout the match

And Sarah played miles better than the last two times I've seen her - really pleased to see her coming on so well - the French have a huge hole in their female players

Talking of the huge hole in French women's tennis, in the latest edition of French Tennis Magazine, there's a big feature on the decline of women's tennis and the fact that they have been relegated to a Billie Jean King Cup regional group for the first time.

What are your thoughts CD?

Tallking of irritiating games, how many of you have seen Aoi Ito play. I'm kind of low key obsessed.

I'm a bit out of the loop now but it's a real diasaster, that's for sure

The cohort of Fiona Ferro and Océane Dodin i.e. 27 or so are doing little

The Elsa Jacquemot and Diane Parry cohort (i.e. 22 or so) are OK but treading water at the moment

And there's not a single junior in the top-50 - Ksenia Efremova (who's basically Russian) is the only one who - perhaps - has some potential

And not even any youngsters/tiddlers - i.e. no French presence of note in the Petits As

And there seems to be quite a nasty atmosphere at the FFT - one of the top bods for juniors recently vented about how it was the fault of the juniors, they didn't work hard enough, didn't have the right attitude etc - to which the obvious reaction is, well, that's your job, madame, to help instill the right attitude, work ethic etc

The strategy has changed a thousand times, which doesn't help - covering 'base everyone in Paris; let the girls live at home and provide tons of personal coaching; use the elite regional centres; take girls on results; take girls on potential; only take tall girls; only take skinny girls (and give the others eating problems); take anyone; have a East European-style of 'make 'em tough and mean'; have a more holistic style; etc etc'

Honestly, they've had everything....

It's a sorry state at the moment - in direct contrast to the boys

Despite losing Mika Stojsavljevic will get her doubles ranking back and, along with Brooke Black, will get a new doubles CH. An excellent score against a team with a CR of 279. smile
