Really pleased to see Cam getting the win here. He does seem to be coming back into form (from a very low starting point) and he does like IW, so fingers crossed for the next round!
L96: Cameron Norrie WR 77 vs Luca Nardi (ITA) WR 67 - Winner to play (23) Jiri Lehecka (CZE)
L96: (13) Jack Draper WR 14 vs BYE L96: Jacob Fearnley WR 81 vs (WC) Joao Fonseca (BRA) WR 99
That last section is not ideal to say the least.
Jake's been unlucky to draw the sport's new rising star in round 1...Fonseco's had a remarkable start to 2025. Won the Canberra Challenger, qualified for the AO and schooled Rublev in the first round. Then won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires. I suspect this is the last year he'll be unseeded in Indian Wells, never mind needing to rely on a wildcard.
Watched bits of Jake's match with Fonseca in the Canberra semis back in Jan - it'll be interesting to see whether the slower court speed here helps him in any way. In Canberra, it was quite quick, bouncy and windy which totally suited Fonseca's topspin heavy game - Jake looked outmuscled from pretty much the first point onwards.
Jacob looked like a beaten player in the first set, he had the body language of a beaten player, but fair play to him for turning it around like he has. It's all on the third set now.
Jake is a break up at 2-1 final set. Anyone got any insight into the sudden turn around? The stats for the first two sets were basically the reverse of each other with the loser just making loads more errors than winners and the winner a few more winners than errors. Not sure why as I can't watch it
As someone with a Portuguese wife I've always found it a bit odd how much more ignorant we brits are about Portuguese pronunciations than Spanish. I know they're a little harder/less obvious but the number of sports presenters etc who have no idea how to pronounce Joćo surprises me when they'd have no problem at all with the Spanish equivalent Juan. Anyone got thoughts/insights on this?
Looking at the stats, the one difference is Jake seems to be making more inroads on the Brazilians second serve, and hes created 9 break points , taking 3.
Jake on the other hand has just had 3 break points against him, giving up one. And hes now a break up in this final set. Come on Jake! Basically hanging tough and pressurising that second serve - although also cant watch so reading into the stats
