Weeks 10 & 11- ATP Masters 1000 - BNP Paribas Open - Indian Wells, CA, USA (hard)

Lol the ATP website live score has Joao's first serve speed average at 513mph for set three! I noticed this then noticed the tag like at the top says 'ATP TOUR it all adds up' haha

His big serving has seen him turn it around. Jake needs to hold here at 3-4

oooh that feels like a match that got away .. I felt it was on Jake's racket in the first half of that last set but once that 6th game slipped away the momentum swung back the other way

Hmm Jake should probably have won that. Serve just deserted him in last few games.

It was a war of attrition at the end of the day with different factors coming into play like the crowd being largely pro-Brazilian (J was distracted by one particularly vocal fan who kept calling out just as he was about to serve). Early in the third set he won a marathon game going on for nine minutes that seemed important at the time but later in the same set he lost a couple of the longer games and it told against him. Jacob couldn't seem to string two effective shots together. He would play something brilliant and then lapse into mediocrity with the very next shot.

I'm sure he will gain from this. It's all part of a learning experience for a 23yo tennis player.

Yeah, felt like he was going to take it and then lost 5 of the last 6 games. Or maybe the last 5

I think it was his nerve rather than his serve that deserted him .. a few wild shots reappeared from the first set .. and what about that easy volley he smashed out the back of the court

I would add though, that he will learn what he did to lose, and learn what to do to win at the same level .. top 50 here we come

50% first serves in final set and his only 3 double faults in the match suggest other  Wild shots from both players due to the wind.

Two very good players had it out there I know it got away from Jacob but the standard of that match was incredibly high

Just got to watching some of this on the highlights. It also looked from that (which obvs only tells a limited story) like Jake's forehand deserted him a bit at the end too? But before that I was impressed and really pleased at the amount of power from Jake at times. From memory of seeing him play Fonseca in Aus I was concerned that he might be slightly underpowered at this level but he hit some great heavy forehands cross court especially. It's always nice to see a player with the wider angle cameras they use on big courts for the first time. I've mostly just seen Jake from the close cameras at challengers and it gives a very different feel. I definitely feel encouraged overall and I'm thinking top 30 for Jake now

Same GBJ, he looked way more underpowered in Australia, but now that fearhand is looking like a real weapon!

It seemed very encouraging. Fonseca is going to ba a star and Jake's turning out not bad at all.

Pity Jake couldn't edge a win here because it's sure not going to get any easier in the future vs Fonseca. I'm in on the Jake for top 30 shout.
