Seems like Indian Wells has taken more of a toll on players than usual this year. Almost everyone who went deep at that event, both in the men's and women's draws, seems to have arrived in Miami absolutely wiped.
Watched a bit of Emma's match last night. Was clear from early on that Kessler had little chance, especially given how well Emma returns. Makes sense that she was carrying a back injury - I was watching the first few games thinking, how has she made the top 50 with that powderpuff serve?
Shame we're not going to see Emma vs Mirra which would have been fascinating.
Interesting match coming with Anisimova, another big hitting but unpredictable player. I watched their second round match at the Australian Open which Emma won in straights. Anisimova had plenty of chances - Emma did a great job of using her athleticism to retrieve enough balls before Anisimova dumped it wide or long. Really depends which Anisimova turns up.
Bit of telling comment in post match interview with Emma. Relaxing playing ball with her team really helped her. Then I dont like to be told what to do.. Says it all really
So coach wise she basically wants/needs someone who can tell her what to do and how to improve without apparently telling her what to do!
I presume this is what this comment leans tomwards?
Good result. She played pretty well last night even if her opponent was injured. Tough game later today. Can Emma get enough balls back into play to frustrate Anisimova?

Seeds are not doing too well, there are only eight of the top 16 left.
Yes, some players may be wiped as Sheddie says, but actually my first reaction was that 8 of the top 16 seeds coming through 2 rounds from the L64 probably stood up pretty well against other recent years. And it does include the top 4 seeds.
It was surely more that Indian Wells was exceptional for the women this year when 10 of the top 16 seeds made the last 16, including the top 8 seeds.
I looked back to Indian Wells and Miami 2024. For both tournaments just 6 of the top 16 seeds made the L16.

Yes it was Harry!
We forget sometimes that she is (and was as a teenager) a precocious still very young adult. Many who are very capable and confident at that age find their confidence tipping over into perhaps too much self belief! Ultimately it is up to her what she wants to do. I think she only wants a hitting partner to travel with, whether that's the correct thing to do is up to time to find out.
Good tournament so far though. The last match was a little lucky effort-wise, but she's got a great chance vs Anisimova as well.

It is difficult to infer what she's thinking with those comments she's made. She says she's a better player when she's playing authentically but yesterday she was able to relax somewhat against an opponent who was not really firing from the get go. This gave a false impression. What I saw the match earlier when fortunes were swinging one way and another, was her confidence was rising and falling. This is not the sign of someone playing authentically, but someone who doesn't trust how she is executing.
I really hope what she is saying is I know how I want to play, and I want a coach who will help me deliver that way of playing, rather than someone who is going to tell me what they see as the best way for me to play. She sure needs someone to help her deliver that as she is using a limited range of shots at the moment - less than 4 years ago. It was good to see that backhand pass yesterday - we don't see that against the better players. It's that sort of shot she needs coaching on.
Any news on where this takes her ranking wise now?
Good solid week. Next match will be tough but shes more than capable.
Currently up 8 places to live ranked 52, with just young Aiexandra Eala* who could displace her by reaching the final.
A win tonight and into the QF and Emma would be live ranked 48.
* Eala, the 19yo Phillipine former JWR 2 (at age 15) and US Open junior champion at age 17, is having a bit of a break-out tournament, beating Ostapenko and Keys and playing Badosa tonight.
Looks like Emmas match will be around 7pm. She is on Butch Buchholz stadium.
At 6.11 pm Qinwen Zheng is 6-2 4-3* up on Ashlyn Krueger in the preceding match so Emma could be on before 7 pm. Probably after if that match goes to 3 sets.
Or is 7 pm a not before time?

It's not before 7pm. Probably academic with Krueger extending the second set
