Weeks 12 & 13 - WTA1000 - Miami, USA - Hard

I thought that the LL spot is drawn between the 4 top ranked losers in the FQR?

So Sonay has a 25% chance?

Different rules if there are no vacancies when quaifying is completed. The order is determined by singles rankings (WTA rulebook)

Oh well, I wondered how the events of last week would effect her, but I didn't see the match, so no clue whether her opponent just played a blinder.

I didn't see it all but, no, her opponent didn't play a blinder

Sonay really had the better of the match, from the bits I saw

She had a lot of chances to move away in the score, a lot of momentum

It hinged, really, on certain key points - and in those key points Townsend played well and Sonay played less well

A bit of a shame but not a disaster - she certainly wasn't outplayed in general

Thanks CD, so maybe some fatigue knock on from last week, especially mentally.

I saw most of the 2nd set and there didn't seem much in the way of rallies. So it wasn't a particularly exciting match to watch despite the closeness of the sets.

Doubles draw is out

L32:- Tereza Mihalikova (SVK) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR64 (33+31) v Linda Noskova (CZE) / Clara Tauson (DEN) CR287 (75+212)
I think Noskova and Tauson are a new partnership, so hard to predict how they will play.

Potential second round opponents are Ostapenko and Perez, seeded 4

Thanks, did you see any signs of fatigue from Sonay from her great run at IW?

Nothing obvious but she didn't seem to be chasing down every ball as you might if you were full of energy, so probably a bit below par.

Emma went 2-0 up at the start, Ishii pulled it back to 2-2 but that pretty much ended Issi's resistance as Emma reeled off nine games in a row, before Ishii finally managed to hold. Emma served better today, 6 aces one DF.

Agree. I thought Emma was going for her first serve more. Wasnt always catching the lines but looked potentially much stronger.

Good stuff, well I presume it was pretty good stuff, not having seen any of it.

Serve seems to have been in a much healthier state. Stats saying 6 aces and 1 DF, just 1 BP conceded which was taken.

No doubt Emma Navarro in R2 will be a big step up. But nice to ease into the tournament with a straightforward looking outing.
