Boys & Girls: U14 Super Category Taça Internacional Maia Jovem, Portugal, clay (Week 15)

What a match !!!

I thought Sofia was going to lose it big time when she was 5-2 up in the second and two games slipped away and she was practically in tears and hyper-ventilating

But she managed to steady the ship, and the Hungarian girl had a few yips too

Mega congrats to our player - a really really gutsy win

And at the top level too

Superb tournament from Sofia, she has lovely technique and as Coup Droit has said, she really dug in and overcame her emotions at the end. Congrats Sofia! :)

Unusually Sofia is ranked much higher in the under 16 race to the Monte Carlo masters (8) than the under 14 race (156 - currently led by Grace Watson) but this title will bump her up to about 20 in the under 14 race. She had a series of good results in under 16 events in Spain, where she is based, at the back end of last year, which explains her high under 16 race ranking

F

(3) Sofia Tatu d. (15) Noemi Nogradi (HUN) 6-3 6-4

I wonder if Sofia will get an invite to the Wimbly 14U championships?

Obviously she seems miles more a clay courter, and there will be Grace and Liv etc all wanting one, not to mention the 2012s (I'm assuming Meg has moved on)

But a Super Cat win is a Super Cat win

Yes, I think she should be in consideration along with those mentioned. I imagine they will give a place to at least one of the top 2012s (or even two of them). And Megan is going to be playing 18U Junior Wimbledon along with Daniella in qualifying (although that might get upgraded). This might be a wild take, but maybe she could even get a 18U Wimbledon qualifying WC, leaving more slots for the best 2012s (that's what I would do).

But there's only three spaces in the 14Us, isn't there? So you can't have two 2012s, and then the best 2011s. Three slots is not a lot

Yes, I wondered if they might give Tatu a quali Junior Wimbly WC, if they can't fit her into the 14Us

Or maybe they'll give her a Roehampton MD WC or something llike that instead

The winner and runner up of the 14U grass grade 1 in May will automatically get a place in the 14u Wimbledon event. So will the winner of the grass Tennis Europe. The grade 1 is open to British nationals only so that will give 2 of them a place straight away. Grace, Millica, Hermione are already entered and the majority of the top 11 and 12 born girls will enter too

Thanks, Rose
So all three places are dictated by the qualifying events, no discretionary places?

This is the info on the 14U grass nationals fact page

This event's winner and runner-up will automatically qualify for the New Worldwide 14&Under, Junior Invitational event in Wimbledon during the second week of the Championships. Players will be awarded Hotel, Full hospitality, Transportation and an exclusive Accreditation to The Championships. Players must have a GBR IPIN to be eligible to accept the wildcard and be in good standing with the LTA & AELTC.

The winner from the 14U at Raynes will also get a place

There are wild cards too but not many at all. Last year in the girls, Daniella and Megan qualified through the grass nationals and Liv had a wildcard

Megan also won the grass TE but had already qualified through the grass nationals so that left a space as well

Thanks again, Rose

Yes, looking at last year's draw, only having 16 players in total, and GB only having 3 players, makes it very skinny

A lot of pressure to do well at the qualifying events you mention - the LTA will be miffed, no doubt, if their favourite picks don't come through, or are sick that day. But it makes it an open playing field.

And, re Sofia as per this thread, would certainly mean that she'd have to play, which is right and proper.

Still think a wildcard or two should be coming her way into some other event, if she wanted it - I wonder if the LTA are in touch with her coach, her academy.

My understanding is that they are but that the family are very happy doing their own thing. I believe Sarah is her older sister and they did similar with her too. They have a great set up in Spain and dad is very involved and they want to keep it that way. Sofia doesnt play in GB much. She played the clay court championship in Bournemouth a couple of years ago and lost to khadija in the semis which I was quite surprised about as Sofia looked the better player by a long shot (I watched the first set)

Tennis Europe has an article including photo of Sarah with her trophy. The grass court events mentioned above straddle the fourth of the six Super Category events this year (Torneo Avvenire in Milan), so she may choose to miss them or make a swift transition for just the Tennis Europe grass court event

Whoops no  I knew that was likely to happen at some point when I first twigged there were two sisters with 5 letter names beginning with S
