Good quality first set. Second set not (Germans were pretty flawless). But despite the result yesterday, I do think this German pair are much stronger than the Dutch one, so if it comes down to it, today's result doesn't leave me any more worried about winning a crucial doubles tie than I already was.
Interesting to see where this lands today; feels like a fifty fifty match. Britain has the higher ranked players, by some way, but the Dutch are at home and in their opener despatched the German team much more easily than we did.
Presumably we will play the same team as yesterday ?
Vedder is playing above her ranking. Sonay about true to hers. Some very good call striking from both girls - hard and clean.
Sonay has *30-0, pulled back to *30-30. Just misses the drop shot and she's break point down. Saved. Monster forehand line for game point but can't get out the game. Vedder goes long on break point two and three but unwinds on a return to save Sonay's second game point.
4-5*
She plays so few backhands Sonay there's a slight intake of breath whenever I see she's having to hit one. Not as bad as when she's at the net when you know it's going to be shaky though.
Probably should have had this finished by now, instead going to have to dig extremely deep. An absolutely brutal game to lose that one.
One point there displayed how clay court tennis should have automated line calls when the umpire had no clue where the ball had landed and first of all over ruled the call of out and when Sonay asked the umpire where it had landed the umpire pointed to a place inside the court when the cameras showed that it had gone long. No-one can question the umpire who is supposed to be fair and honest.
Yes that was a monumental mess up from someone who is supposed to be one of the best in the game.
Sonay manages to pull the trigger this time and gets the break. Vedder's level has dropped a bit, she's been so good all day it was going to be hard for her to stick there, but not over yet.
