Boys & Girls: 2025 U18 Junior National Championships, NTC, acrylic (Week 16)

is it raining today? Live scores suggests play hasnt started yet?

If they need it, presumably they can access the NTC indoor court options?

Actually, I see the live scores schedule of play is showing some indoor courts now. Looks like they have 3 courts indoors for girls singles about to start

A couple of upsets in the girls - Allegra K-D lost to Edie Griffiths, that is the 3rd seed out. And Hollie Smart beat Mia Wainwright (7th seed) in the last 16 also.

Hannah got taken to a tie break opening set versus Lois Newberry but came through the second comfortably.

Maybe the indoor court move threw a couple of them out?

Daniella Britton is also a set all and a break on Hep (6th seed); and Ruby Cooling took the opening set off Dani Piani, seeded 8. Tegan Bush is also a break up on FLora Johnson, seeded 4. All on the indoor courts.

Mika is a set up on Megan, but it was 6-4

Edie Griffiths, Hollie Smart, Daniella Britton and Megan Knight were all playing at that venue last week, albeit mainly outdoors, so have had recent competition on similar surfaces but its great to see the youngsters doing so well.

Hannah has just come off of 3 weeks competition and a week or so training on European clay, so I would expect there is a certain amount of adjustment for her.  I think Allegra has been playing clay recently too.

Daniella Britton has just beaten Hep, a third seeding upset so far in the girls today.

Flora lost the first set versus Tegan, 6-2.

3 out of 5 seeding upsets so far and 2 of the 3 matches in action still could go that way. All the girls are indoors, the boys seems to be outdoors

The girls lower half QF's are going to be:

Edie Griffiths (WC) versus Brooke Black (5)

Daniella Britton (WC) versus Hannah Klugman (2)

And Tegan Bush crushes Flora Johnson for the loss of 3 games, so that is also the 4th seed out.

Mika Stojsavljevic (1) versus Hollie Smart

Tegan Bush versus Ruby Cooling

Edie Griffiths (WC) versus Brooke Black (5)

Daniella Britton (WC) versus Hannah Klugman (2)

I don't follow juniors much at all, but do like to follow the Nationals - 5 seeding upsets seems stunning to me, albeit top 2 survived. Am I right to be surprised or did others expect most of these? Any genuine upsets?

Whilst Im not for one moment saying I predicted those results I cant say any of them really surprised me. If I had to pick one I wouldnt have thought Edie would beat Allegra but that still wasnt a huge shock.

The problem with the LTA seeding is that its not totally reflective of international success. For example, I would argue that making the quarter finals in a strong J200 is better than making the final in a British tour in Scotland (for example) The LTA award a lot more points for the British tour though.
When you have someone like Mia, who has won a few British Tours, this is going to make a big difference to her seeding as her ranking is higher than Hollies but their level is very similar.
Same with Daniella and Hep. Danni has done very well at ITFs and in GB events but this isnt reflected strongly enough in her LTA ranking

Megan, as a 2011 born, is too young for points for open events to count so the 3300 points she would have gained for the British tour masters arent counted at all. As shes still officially 14U so she can only count 3 of her 16/18U results for her LTA ranking. She might have been seeded if they had all counted.

Basically, with the exception of Hannah and Mika who are so far ahead that their LTA rankings match their international ones, the rest cant be relied on at all

Thats interesting and good feedback; same with boys I presume?

Who would you expect / predict to come through to the last 4 of the girls? Mika and Hannah? Brooke?

The boys last 8 is:

Oli Bonding (1) v Liam Channon (q)

Mark Ceban (3) v Ferran Redza (7)

Rhys Lawlor (8) v Conor Brady (4)

Dylan Davies (5) v Ben Gusic-Wan (2)

Just the one seeding upset, for Liam over Zech

For some reason the boys arent so bad. I think its because its harder for them to play some of the events as there are more boys and there is more of a physical difference between a 13 and 18 year old boy than there is a 13 and 18 year old girl. Because of that boys tend to mostly play their own age group and you dont see many 16 year old boys winning British tours. So not many inflated LTA points. That keeps the seeding more level.

im going for Tegan, Brooke, Mika and Hannah in the semis

Tegan and Brooke could cause an upset to either of the other 2

The girls QF's are in play and Daniella Britton has just taken the opening set from Hannah K, 7-6.

Let's see if she can maintain it, good effort from Daniella so far

Mika won. What happened in Hannah's match? The players have come off at 6-7 3-0 40-A* to Hannah.
