Weeks 17 & 18 - ATP Masters 1000 - Madrid, Spain (clay)

L32:  (15) Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) WR 16 defeated (Q) Jacob Fearnley WR 68 by 6-4 7-6(3)

Wily old Dimi was always going to be a tough nut to crack.  Not a bad effort by Jake, though.

Shame. Jake was 3-2 up in that breaker with his serve to come, but lost the last 5 points in a row. The gap between them wasnt huge TBF and a great tournament overall.

Diallo and his big serve seem to be getting the better of Cam now; we all know these courts are faster than usual clay, as per Harri H in his blog

Madrid is located about 650 meters above sea level, which makes the ball behave much faster. I didn't add any more pounds to the tension of the rackets this time, but you can clearly see that the ball flies longer more easily. The importance of the serve is also somewhat greater than on a regular court, because returning the first serve in particular is difficult when the ball comes quickly and bounces really high. You can get to the second serves quite easily, so you have to be careful not to give your opponents too many of them to return.

FIrst set to Jack, 7-6 (2). Beating the Italian would be a great win if he can see it through

Yes, as they walked off, at the end of the set, he just came over to Jack and smiling ruefully, apologised but said he couldn't continue

It's taking a damn good player to beat Jake these days.

Agreed! That certainly wasn't a rout by an experienced and highly ranked player on a surface where Jake has limited experience.

As a result of his efforts, Jake may break into the top 60 when the next rankings come out and should still have a new CH even if a few other players still in tournaments this week go past him.

Well done to Jack and although Cam lost, he does seem to be getting some form back, which is good to see.

As the power went off yesterday, Fearnley was clearly getting on terms and had just broken Dimitrov. Rubbish luck the timing and today he looked quite nervous I had thought but onwards and upwards.
