Emma beat Alexandrova this year in the Australian Open and lost to her in Doha. However they were both on hard courts and this is clay. Alexandrova has already beaten three top ten players on clay this year, while Emma is pretty inexperienced on clay. I think it would be an extraordinary result for Emma to win this one.

I thought the first five games of the final set was outstanding tennis from Emma and the Maya turned up again and was so aggressive.
It was a quality match.

Agree completely. When I saw the draw I was nervous as, apart from Sakkari, on clay, Joint was about as tough a draw from the qualifiers that Emma could have got. I've seen a fair amount of Joint this year and though she hasn't always won she's been playing with a lot of confidence and at time quite fearlessly as you often get with young players. This was never going to be easy and though Emma could have won in two sets and was better when she was aggressive rather than defensive she did come out on top in the end. Needs to be more credit for her opponent who played some very high level tennis and will surely be a top 40 player by the end of the year. Emma was playing someone who has won a lot of matches in the past 18 months. I know at a lower level but something like 70? I think I heard.
Still good to have 2 players through to the second round. Katie, I'm afraid was her usual self on clay. She seems unhappy with the surface in terms of movement.
Alexandrova will tough and will start clear favourite for me on clay where she has looked pretty decent in the last couple of tournaments.
Interesting that Sonay's schedule is out of whack - she'll have had two days off before her second round.
Yes, it's her Tuesday match that was out of synch.
She's in the top half ( along with Emma ) who are scheduled to play their R2 matches on Friday. Today is bottom half R2. On Tuesday, as well as FQR matches, 10 R1 matches were played but the other 9 were bottom half.
A bit strange. May she make good use of the additional time.

Thank you. Maybe for once they were considerate of players coming in from other events.

Teichmann has once made the 4th round at the French in 2022. That same year she made the SF of Madrid and QF at Rome. She has also won two 250 events on clay but those are all the way back in 2019. Definitely no slouch on clay, but is definitely nowhere near her best form these days.
