Week 19 - WTA1000 - Rome, Italy Clay

And served for the set at 5-4, after a real struggle to get back on terms

But two UEs and a DF didn't help her cause ....

Emma winning 14% behind her 2nd serve, 70% on first, first serve percentage 68%. Perhaps consider adopting two first serves in these circumstances.

VK up 40-15, lets ER back into the game, then Raducanu return lands very short to earn her bp and good play gets her the break *1-0

So naturally, Emma does 4 safe 2nd serves and VK gifts her 4 points with errors. VK error count seemed low in 1st set but lots early in the 2nd. 2-0*

Nice drop shot then backhand pass winner combination from Raducanu for 0-30, good agg f for 15-40, poor b cc error from VK for the break *3-0

Emma survives another service game in which her 1st serve went missing, 4-3 on 2nd serve points in that game. Impressive b pass winner to save bp. Super ER b dtl winner earlier in the game 4-0*

VK getting broken game after game, due as much to her errors as Emma doing anything special. Fierce ER f return off a 1st on opening point of game*5-0

VK MTO

Both players with 5 winners in this set.

Emma still struggling to land her 1st serve, just 2 out of 8. From 40-15, df then soft f error long after 2nd 40-40, K b cc ue wide for A-, VK takes on a 2nd but misses 6-0

--

Some cautious rallies, ER defends before VK f cc error 0-15, good agg f from Emma 0-30, Emma almost lands big f return but just out 15-30, long rally ends with VK going for b dtl but missing 15-40, super return winner from Emma off a 2nd for the break *1-0

A df but 3 VK errors as Emma holds to 15 2-0*

VK holds to 30, some good play from her *2-1

Couple of impressive f winners from Emma, holds to 15 after 5 1st serves 3-1*

VK winners for 30-0, super Raducanu f dtl winner 30-15, awful f error net from VK after good wide serve 30-30, Emma gets a bit lucky with net cord landing short then VK volley on the stretch just wide after decent ER b pass 30-40, poor b error miles long from VK for break *4-1

Emma goes for a big f but just misses 0-15, VK takes on a 2nd but just misses long 15-15, three 1st serves in a row, super f cc winner from Emma for the hold to 15 5-1*

Decent lob from Emma that VK can only hit tame overhead, setting up ER f cc winner 0-30, VK just wide 0-40, good VK b winner after 1st 15-40, Emma goes after a 2nd but misses wide 30-40, good play from Emma wins the match with a f cc winner 6-1

--

A strange contest. Emma won the 2nd and 3rd sets comfortably without playing amazing tennis, though her winner to unforced error count will have been pretty good. Clearly found a formula that worked in these circumstances. VK didn't make that many errors in the 1st set.

In the opening set, a lot of Raducanu's errors were when she was attempting to hit winners, missing narrowly. There were some absolutely awful passive rallies from her at times in the opening set. It was a weird mix of shot selection. When Emma's opponent stands wide to receive, she doesn't know what to do. Very few good 1st serves from her in this match.

So after dropping the first set 7-5, Emma is now 5-0 up in the second. Wondering if her opponent has picked up an injury? No sign of it but so many unforced errors. Nevermind all good for Emma!

Emma won the second set 6-0. Is there another MTO at the start of the third? Emma getting some courtside coaching from Petch.

Should be a good match and a good indicator as to where Emma is on clay. Looks like Emma is around WTA 42, just two places behind Katie.

I think Emma will be no1 after the French Championships.

Yes, the stroke content of her game is now looking really good, with the question marks being against reliability rather than quality. Just imagine an Emma with a high percentage of serves, and overheads that wrong-foot her opponent ..

Emma finished the match having converted 8/13 BPs as against Kudermetova's 3/12. When she was at 100% (3/3) early in the second set, having saved loads, Russell Fuller said on Radio 5 Live that Emma actually had the best BP conversion % on the WTA tour this year.

Add in her great TB winning record and she does appear to be very good at focussing on important points and series of points.

Don't lose that Emma but if the focus was possibly a bit more there at other times, that could / should help.

Overall though, doing pretty nicely.

Emma v Coco is third on Grand Stand Arena on Monday, after two ATP matches, not before 14.00.
