Emma had a big chance at 2-1 in the third on the Collins serve. Epic game in which her back pain struggles from set 2 seemed to have faded away, she was blasting returns and tracking everything down. Had at least 4 break points, and Collins seemed on the verge of an emotional breakdown, hitting all kinds of rash shots.
However, unfortunately this suddenly unleashed Danimal, and to be fair to Emma, she didn't really do too much wrong.
Danimal saved all the break points with a series of unreturnable pinpoint serves. And from then onwards, she was blasting winners left, right and centre. Emma was broken, then broke back from 3-3 with a string of incredible returns.
But it was all Danimal. Collins was pumped up, in the zone, and even delivering a few choice words to one of the TV cameramen during the changeover. Took the racket out of Emma's hand pretty much in the final 3 games
Emma did everything but win that 4th game in the third set. There was one break point that Collins hit to the line, it was so close that the Umpire had to get down from her chair and bend down to examine the mark closely before deciding it was in. If it had been an extra mm out, giving Emma an early break,it might have held back Collins' growing confidence. In the last three games she couldn't miss.
Yeah while Emma's subsequently given an interview mentioning her back spasm issues - and I think they came into play in the second set - I don't think they were a factor in the decider.
If Emma broke to go 3-1 up in the third, I think she wins the match. Collins was on the verge of disintegration, and Emma was playing really well again.
