Boys & Girls: J500 Milan, Italy, clay (Week 21)

This is the 4th J500 of the year with its usual strong fields.  British success is rare, with the last winner being Winnie Shaw in 1968 - before it became an under 18 event. Oliver Bonding withdrew a couple of days ago, leaving just Maximilian Carrier in the boys event, who lost out in qualifying.  We do though still have third seed Hannah Klugman and Allegra Korpanec Davies in the girls event.

Allegra is second on court 2 tomorrow, against the Brazilian J500 runner-up, with live scores here

Girls R1 (L64)

Sol Ailin Larraya Guidi (ARG) v Allegra Korpanec Davies

(Q) Adla Lopez (USA) v (3) Hannah Klugman

The Argentinian girl was a player that Allegra beat in her most successful tournament of this year (the J300 final in Asuncion) - and she has repeated the feat today. The strong 4th seed Alena Kovackova is her likely round 2 opponent. Hannah plays tomorrow

Girls R1 (L64)

Allegra Korpanec Davies d. Sol Ailin Larraya Guidi (ARG) 6-3 6-3

In doubles, Allegra is playing today with Leena Freidman (USA) in a match that on paper they should win.

Hannah has teamed up with Lilli Tagger and are seeded 8th, presumably playing tomorrow.  Lilli is probably under-ranked.  She beat Hannah in the SF of the W35 in Spain (early April?) and went on to win that tournament.  So I see this as a strong pairing despite only being seeded 8th.

She played German league tennis on the Sunday, apparently,  and then drove overnight (well, her parents drove overnight) to get her and her sister to Milan, so she could play her R1 match

Bit stupid

Allegra does indeed get Alena, Jana's sister, as her round 2 opponent. She is on court at 8am BST tomorrow, followed by Hannah. Hannah's highly rated opponent has had a couple of indifferent results recently, but did win a J300, beating Julieta Pareja in the final, earlier in the year. Allegra+ and Hannah+ progressed to round 2, and will meet in the quarters if successful tomorrow.

Girls R2

(4) Alena Kovackova (CZE) v Allegra Korpanec Davies
Giulia Safina Popa (ROU) v (3) Hannah Klugman

excellent win by Allegra, beating 4th seeded Alena Kovackova 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.

She will play 16th seed Laima Vladson in Round 3 (last 16).

Hannah has started well and is 2*-1 up on Popa having broken in the first game.

Just a reminder that Hannah is defending QF singles points and SF doubles points here

Allegra didn't play last year and has 100 as her lowest singles counter

So at present Allegra would gain no points for this tournament.  If she manages to win her singles tomorrow she would be at +50 points.

Hannah is currently on -78.75 points but a win tomorrow in single and doubles will match last year's points so net 0.
