First time since 1979 that 3 British women have reached the second round of the French championships. That was the days of Wade and Barker and Hobbs

Technically we had 4 in the 2nd round in 1981, but 2 had byes.

Lets call it 3 first round wins then!

Also, the 2nd round in 1979 was the round of 32, as it was only a 64 draw. Difficult to compare past and present.

R1:- Emily Appleton (GBR) / Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers (ESP) CR166 (86+80) lost to Alexandra Eala (PHI) / Renata Zarazua (MEX) CR319 (225+94) 5-7 4-6

I see they are playing three full sets in the doubles, I'd forgotten that the slams make their own rules !

I think Sonay has the best chance of the three of progressing to R3. I don't think we have had a woman in R3 since Jo Konta reached the SF in 2019.

SO enjoyed the last 20 mins of that

Clara + Linda had all the momentum at the end of that third set - ripping their shots - broke and served for the match

But Liv+ wouldn't go away, so super sneaky doubles play, broke back and forced the match tiebreak

And just ran away with it, with Clara muffing a lot of shots and getting SO irate about it - they then staged a bit of a comeback but it was never really in question

Great win :)

Ooh, that was tense. Didn't think they were going get there, but a great tie-break to 9-3 even if it took a few points to settle it.

R1:- Tereza Mihalikova (SVK) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR66 (34+32) [12] def Linda Noskova (CZE) / Clara Tauson (DEN) CR189 (63+126) 6-3 4-6 7-6[10-6]

That could well be new CH's for both of them, depending on other resuls of course.

Next round will be interesting - Nicolescu/Piter or Fernandez/Puntiseva.

Prior to Jo K reaching the 3rd round and continuing to the SF in 2019, the last British woman to win 2 matches in Paris was Jo Durie in 1992 .She  beat the seeded Anke Huber in the 2nd round. We may have had 5 post 2nd world war  ladies  champions in  Paris with the last being Sue Barker in 1976 but  in recent years it has been our least successful Grand Slam in terms of matches won.

Not British but of some interest Joanna Garland having qualified has won her 1st round match against Katie Volynets  and now has a live ranking inside the top150.

Kimberly and Harriet will play alternates tomorrow - not sure yet which of their opponents has pulled out and new opponents not named yet.

Interesting stats. And reflecting the fact that as a nation we've never been that experienced on clay. And still aren't. But we've now two women (Sonay/Fran) for whom it's their favourite surface, another woman (Raducanu) who plays well on it, and another (Boulter) who's finally committed to developing her game on it.

I remember Konta was terrible on clay early in her career (and not that successful on other surfaces) and probably should have reached the Roland Garros final.

I read comments from Sonay today that she was encouraging Katie to hit topspin which made me chuckle.
