Brooke was broken from *40-15 at 3-4 and that was that, loses 6-3 6-2 but decent enough.

Dani lost 7-5 6-4. Had 40-0* to get the break back in the second but couldn't manage it. Lots of good tennis in there.

Zhu out and replaced by unranked doubles player Chan. Only top 500 players can enter 500s on the advance list I think(?), but below that you can still sign in on site. Slight shame none of the lower ranked Brits in the London area tried their luck (potentially before heading up to Ilkley to try and get in there later) by signing in yesterday and again this morning - very useful prize money for a first round qualies loss if you are 600+.

Absolutely !

James Ward, I remember, used to say there's a real technique in milking the events for every last drop of money and points - and signing in on a complete offchance is one of those techniques

Tbh, it's the LTA's fault in many ways - if you were head of player development, wouldn't you notice the (potential) situation and put a couple of calls in?

Alycia Parks (Q1) lost again, continuing her poor recent form.Beat Muchova at RG but otherwise lost every match bar one since Miami.

Lily had points for 5-0* but just played a series of weirdly diabolical points to get broken

*4-2

Mika in touch but not able to break through, loses the first set on a tiebreak. Hon is a good player but not a scary one, so this is a fairly good test. She's definitely playing better than I've seen of late, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a bit disappointed with how little (to my untrained eye!) she seems to have developed over the past 10 months or so.

Lily gets the first set

As you say, PaulM, her level is a little topsy-turvy but the other woman doesn't look that happy with the surface so hopefully Lily can concentrate all the way through

Mika had a really good opportunity to break at the end of the set and serve for the set

But couldn't quite do it

I guess she's been doing GCSEs and isnt' quite as sharp as she'd like to be - this event, presumably, is one of those 'sharpening up' events

Lots of weapons but, yes, still the same weak areas

I'm hoping she'll grow into the match though - it must take a little while to get going if you've been out for quite a while
