 Marino is defending champ here and despatched Ponchet (who she beat in last years final) in straight sets in round one in a repeat of that final. Emily beating her would be a good scalp. 

Emily's Dad, Mike, is a past champion at Ilkley, back in the late 70's/early 80's. We used to watch him there as kids in the forerunner of this event, albeit no ranking points in those days.

IMO the point of things like the PSP are to give people the opportunity to prove themselves without having to worry about funding etc. It doesn't mean that it's a list of never-ending opportunities. If someone with PSP funding doesn't hit the required standards/milestones, why should they get a MDWC, possibly at the expense of someone not being given that level of support but achieving the same or more.
5-10 years ago it wouldn't have mattered because there wasn't the competition but this year there are 4 definite justified WCs in Burrage, Dart, Jones and Watson (Watson because she is so popular with the British public) plus potentially 1 or 2 previous Champions, leaving little space for anyone not showing enough form.
I think it will be 1 of Mimi, Marni and Lily, if Mika or Hannah are in the running for MDWC then 2 of those 5 but it will be dependent on whether any former Champions ask for a WC.

Marni is a set up and I suspect a SF place would justify a MDWC for Wimbledon, especially as she is now getting funded via the LTA

Shame, she really needs some bigger results. Beyond her 35k win and her top 100 win here, it's been quite a disappointing year of results so far.

She wasn't far away today. Just couldn't quite hang on at the end of the last two sets. Will still time over 20 places in the next rankings.

Problem was she used up so much physical and emotional energy staging a bit comeback in the second only to lose it anyway. Battled hard in the third but never looked like the likely winner.

Definitely much improved tennis on last week though. And on plus side means she can play Nottingham qualies now.
