Week 26 - Wimbledon, Women's Qualifying - Grass

Ranah battled to the end but just lacked that additional bit of quality she needed to see it out from a set and a break up. All her break points at 1-4* in the third she missed with dodgy decision making which is probably an experience thing. Great effort but not her day.

5-7 6-4 6-1 to Kawa

Strong hustle from Marni to hold on to the break, 3-0* final set.

Katy 4-4*

Katy drops the opening set 6-4 from *30-0. Cornet still has some great tricks in there but Katy right in there.

Marni doing enough at the moment, but still very competitive 4-1*

Cornet just took good, Katy loses 6-4 6-3 but some really fun tennis. Great to see her out there.

Have to say, it feels a little disappointing and almost unfair we've only ended up with two wins. We had a great set of draws and all the matches were very winnable, and our girls proved that by putting in excellent battling performances across the board. Just such a shame that they couldn't quite capitalise on the opportunities they created.

For Katie, I think this just came a few weeks too soon, and she couldn't find the consistent level of tennis she needed today. Just hope she's ok physically.

Ella and Ranah I think lacked the belief they could do it. They were right in their matches until the very end, and just need to keep working and proving themselves at the lower level.

Lily was really just a continuation of a poor year where it's not quite happening.

I think Millie is the only one who will really be having a sleepless night. She had both sets, was doing all the right things, but then when it came to the crunch that all went out the window and it was wild swings, double faults, returns miles out. She'll be so gutted as she was so close, but again proved what she is capable of. Let's just keep seeing the progress over the next 12 months, her game is more than good enough to break up into the top 250.

Good luck to Marni and Emily tomorrow.

But goodness, isn't it nice to be able to say with absolute certainty every one of our girls proved they deserved to be out there at this level and their wildcards were well awarded?

It is indeed nice to be able to say they all could've maybe even should've won with more belief and a bit of luck!

Gutted Katie didn't win. I think she was just missing one quality tournament to stretch her a little because although it was great injury wise to motor through the wild card play offs, it's not really the standard of play that would have really prepared her.  But she showed up and played so that is a positive step forward.

Agree it feels like a little bit disappointing. Was hoping for 2/3 more wins.

Nice to se Katie back playing at this level again. Hopefully in 12 months time shes back and winning many matches.

Yes, Katie left it out there and, while she herself might well, I don't think she has anything to reproach herself for. She wasn't yet back to the level to win a match such as today's. She was second best but not by far and fought well. Again hopefully she will be OK, and promisingly, as has been said, she played her best stuff post her MTO. May she continue to progress.

Wish we had had rather more success today but I had an enjoyable day, essentially just watching two almost full matches.

Was good to see Katie S back in action. Not the result we wanted but she'll get back up there, all being well.

And it was lovely to see Emily App prevail. She put folk through the ringer a bit but she got there in the end and saw it out well. It was not given to her, if you leave out the fairly important and, sorry, highly amusing shanked second serve against her contributing to the vital break ( some folk near me were proclaiming "I can do that!" )

Finally enjoyed a fair bit of the first set of Katy D vs Cornet. But it was standing room only as too popular for Court 3, and I needed a lie down, let alone a seat, after Emily App and before my hike back to my bus stop.

And tomorrow will be another day at this great event ...

I stayed to the end of Katy' s match - very entertaining. I'll post more later when I have charged my phone. I also used the whole battery in my camera !
