Weeks 27 & 28 - The Championships, Wimbledon (Womens') (grass) - main draw

Hannah is a bit out of her depth but every once in a while strings together a point that shows what she has to offer. It's not a nice watch but also no reason to panic about how she's developing.

Hopefully she can get into the second set a bit better, she was starting to play with more intent towards the end of the first.

Hannah gets on the board and is beginning to get comfortable.

Leylah doing nothing that impressive. I feel even with the score that if Hannah could start doing something she could win this.

A dreadful first two-thirds of the set

But the final third started to look at least respectable

Breaks back and then holds.

Serve seems to be going better now and her ****s are penetrating more.

Hannah giving a good account of herself now.

But she's losing a lot of points that against her normal standard of opponent she'd have won. Mentally that's quite tough to deal with time and time again. Finally holds for 3-2*

Yes but thats why she is here. To learn.

From 4-0 down, it's been decent, and getting better
Even assuming she loses in two, it's been most definitely been 'useful' for her for the future
And if she does better.....

Fernandez serve is bad today. If Hannah can take advantage, who knows.

Her problem right now seems to be the return. She either misses into the net or its too short.

Definitely had chances that game to break again.

Agree. And the fact she's been getting better as it goes is encouraging in terms of her learning. Should have done better from 30-0* in that game though, bad miss up the line and netting some pretty soft returns into the net.

Sore volley miss and then a double combo contributes to her being broken for 3-4*

Fernandez looks exceptionally beatable. If she's playing like this any regular tour player is going to demolish her. Not a suprise on this showing she's never been past round 2 here.

 Completely agree

She doesn't have a flat return,  far too much top spin for me

Not a great performance let's be honest against a ropey looking opponent, but a very useful debut at this level all the same with some nice moments.

Be very educational for Hannah watching this one back - she should see and learn from how little it would have taken for her to have really been putting serious pressure on Fernandez. Just needed to return a fraction better, she netted so many fairly routine seconds serves.

Oh well. Onto the juniors.
