Emma served really well and got plenty of cheap points and really went after the second serve. Stearns levels went up in the second set and really put Emma under pressure and was serving at 4-3 and then I fell asleep.....
Essentially, Stearns level remained high, but Emma raised hers higher - there were flashes of top 10 tennis
I watched the first set and some of the second before faling asleep. Best I've seen Emma play for a while with plenty of attacking groundstrokes andputting a lot of pressure on Stearns serve.
Plenty of movement in the live rankings around the 30-40 mark. Emma is down 4 to 37 despite her win, but it is all very close and a couple more wins (hereor in Cincinnati) will take her back up into a seeding position again.
Coco Gauff is making a meal of her progress in the Toronto Masters.
Winning both her opening rounds 2-1 with game counts of 18-17 and 17-13, she is making it a bit harder than she needs to.
However the draw is parting like the seas.
Her second match (R3) was seeded to be Olga Danilovic (29) but she lost in round 2.
Her fourth round match should have been Diana Schrader (14) but she was eliminated in round 2 by a non seed, and so was Sofia Kenin (23), so Gauff will face a non seed in Round 4.
And with the 7, 12, 18 and 23 seeds in the next draw section down all falling at their first hurdle, there will be no seed in the QF either.
And Mirra Andreeva (4) just fell so her SF opponent will be either Emma Navarro (8), Elena Rybakina (9), Marta Kostyuk (24), McCartney Kessler (28), Dayana Yastramenska (30) or non-seed Jacqueline Christian.

Not Navarro as she was beaten by Yastremska .However Rybakina beat non seed Cristian.

Yeah but Coco had a poor grass court season, she hasn't had a brilliant start to the US hard court swing and she is struggling here. The women beating her have better form at present. She took a long break doing a lot of PR, concert going etc. I just wonder if she is bit burnt out?

Emma's match is early Saturday morning. She is 4th on Centre court with the match before hers starting not before midnight, UK time, so she is unlikely to start much before 1.30am.
Fingers crossed for Emma - this will be a real test. it will also be really interesting to see how Anisimova plays.
Anisimova's 6-0 6-0 drubbing in the Wimbledon final must have had some effect to her psychologically, and although I like Anisimova and feel for her over the sudden loss of her Dad at courtside and how difficult that must have been for her, I do also feel that she showed a brittle temperament in that final, and I'm sure all of her top rivals will have noted how she folded and mentally gave up in that final.
When she failed to hold her serve in the second set, she seemed to mentally throw in the towel, and I feel that Emma may have the edge over her mentally here, and that although in terms of their physical game it could be really close, if it does go down to a third set, Emma may have the character to come through.
Hope I'm right anyway - a treat for us night owls - I've been looking forward to this for a couple of days. Hopefully it will be finished before dawn though.
Swiatek has just won her match in double quick time, so Emma should be on in a minute - don't think I'll bother posting, as looks like I'm the only night owl (once again) - mind you my day never starts before 11 am, so I probably have an advantage over lots of people on here. Anyway, c'mon Emma.

Anisimova is not only hitting the ball very hard on service, forehand and backhand, she is also very rarely missing. Time and time again she would go for her shot and hit the line.
R32:- Emma Raducanu (GBR) WR 33 lost to Amanda Anisimova (USA) [5] WR 7 2-6 1-6
