Week 33 - W35 Aldershot, Great Britain - Hard

Hmm. Hopefully she's more mentally there in her next match and can better demonstrate her abilities. Onward ..

I guess she had a long week last week! Don't recall her doing to many back to back W35s when she went deep at least! Plus it's Aldershot! I get the not being sure if you want to hang about too long :p

It's not a suprise that Alicia also lost today

I think it's common for both the winner and the finalist from the previous week to have a bit of a dip (Oli Tarvet has arguably had the same)

More mental than physical, IMO, it's just difficult to get youself going again, when you'e been doing it every day of the previous week (unlike the others, who obviously haven't) - it's draining

Yes you put it far better than I did! Just seemed a bit like she was toiling a little at times and losing concentration! But she when on was pretty good!

So, we have six through, three guaranteed and three extra

Could have SO easily been four with Jaqui and her MP - but could have easily also been two, with Hannah's down-to-the-wire effort

But three it is

Points to note:

Three out of the six are juniors (Mimi, Brooke and Hannah)

Hannah has covered her 2024 R2 points, these are new points for Brooke who lost in qualis last year, and Mimi has the big ask as she was winner here last year (in singles and doubles)

Last year, we only had three players through to R2 and this year it's double that, which is great (although last year, of course, we had the winner - and that remains to be seen)

Just Alice Gillan's win, that i didn't predict. Got Brooke and Hannah

This round looksa bit more competitive for the GB ladies.
Brooke has the toughest match, but the other 5 all have good chances.
I'm expecting four through.

But am going the other way this time
I'm a seller at paulisi's four and will go for three max

(and would love to be wrong)

TBH win or lose, Mimi is the only one of the three juniors to move onto the senior tour at the beginning of October when she turns 18. Would be nice for her to win but so many opportunities to gather points in the coming months when she is unfettered from the strict WTA age rules.

She can play juniors until the end of the year - you're not kicked out when you turn 18

And there's pretty few restrictions anyway at her age, so the turning 18 won't make any real difference - she says she quit juniors after Wimbledon

And what about Brooke? She's the same age as Mimi - she's 17 and turning 18 this year so it's not just Mimi, it's Brooke too

Mimi's defence of points though is important, she'll want to keep her ranking up if poss

The restriction is 16 tournaments at 17 years old and unlimited at 18 years old. I think the limit of 16 tournaments is slightly onerous - this is Mimi's 16th since she won last year so she will be restricted until 02 October when she turns 18. Brooke has only played 10 (including ths one) so has some to spare before her birthday on 20 November.

I wasnt sure how close she was to the limit, but opportunity for Brooke. It will be very interesting watching these two over the next few months to see where they land in seniors before the grass season starts again. Transition can be tough.
