I watched Emma and Carlos. It was a fun event with some crazy points but the format was insane. Such short sets and resulting short matches means there is little chance of any tension building up which is one of the main features of tennis. I can't see it lasting in this format.
Agreed, the length was a real issue. It just didnt feel serious.
Also, what the crowd cheered for was good doubles skills - fun net points - which they would have got a lot more of with doubles players...
Not surprising. Replaced by Collins and Harrison as the pair with the highest combined singles ranking from those that had already entered
Christian Harrison does not have a singles ranking...
Just quoting the USO website ! "they were the duo with the highest combined singles ranking that signed in by 10:30 a.m. today. Priority for the alternate was given to those that had been entered by the initial July 28 deadline."

So, lets say Jack and Pegula win this thing? How would people rate that? Would Jack be regarded by you as a grand slam champion?
This is not a Grand Slam event, in my eyes: it is an exhibition.
Mr Draper will be regarded (by me) as a Grand Slam champion when he wins a Grand Slam event.
This is more akin to the Par 3 Contest that is held with the golf Masters Tournament, or the Home Run Derby baseball event. ... or All-Star games. All of which appear to be unique to American professional sports: it is almost as if real sport is too hard for the "fans" to appreciate.
I guess this can also be compared to 20/20 cricket or the Hundred. Detested by many but gets bums on seats and money rolling in I suppose.
In fairness Mixed doubles has always been seen more as a bit of fun by a lot of fans and competitors. I remember Barry Davis or Sue Barker describing it as such when it was shown at Wimbledon.
The issue is that the true doubles players need to have a path into this competition. Maybe some kind of qualifying event or expanding the tournament by a round to allow the top doubles players to also have a chance to experience full stadiums and the boatload of money that comes with this format?
