So, lets say Jack and Pegula win this thing? How would people rate that? Would Jack be regarded by you as a grand slam champion?

I wouldn't be voting for him in Player of the Month.

With the other semi being Collins and Harrison v Errani and Vavassori, it doesnt feel like this evening has the big hitting stars they probably hoped for when they set this event up.

the box office stars are all out really, unless you feel Swiatek and Draper are box office in New York, and Im not sure they are the 2 they would have really liked.

I take your point but Pegula is obviously top box office - she's 4th in the world and Amercian

Do you think shes a name that will draw people in? I probably dont pay enough attention to womens tennis, and the stars, but being honest i didnt even recognise her before seeing her with Jack. But it probably says more about me. Errani, Vavassori, Harrison, Collins, Ruud even - certainly not box office. Swiatek, Pegula - Ill take that on advisory! Jack - in New York?

the names theyd have liked would have been Alcaraz, Dkokovic, Sinner, Zverev, Raducanu, Venus, Sabalenka, I suspect - and all of those went out or didnt make it to the start line.

If the route the US Open wants to go down is this then maybe they need to look at teams that have 1 singles player and 1 doubles player.

Arent they supposed to be good mates?

Some might say very good. But there was one hug missing here: https://x.com/bethdutton_k/status/1957893439455990017

I mean Jack looked like he was good for a hug ( he hugs everyone!) but Emma avoided it. Maybe too close to home?!

Didnt want to upset Carlos! Who actually got a big hug off Jack..

So Jack has called it out in his press conference with Pegula as an exhibition. Pegula didnt disagree but wasnt happy with that terminology. Small smirk on Jacks face at the end. Well said young man!

Jack of course is already in PoS vote so winning this makes no difference to that in terms of being a grand slam winner , so no conflicts there! If it happens of course!

Yes, I don't know but I rather doubt Pegula is truly top box office even in the US.

Now while this comes with me admittedly having given it close to zero attention, and even ignoring the whole ridiculousness IMO of overlooking most top doubles players, but it seems to have gone pretty badly with all the pull outs and big name losses, given it was set up with the big names in mind.

I assume that it will be declared a great success by the organisers with at most consideration of a few tweaks

Well if they want truly box office and guaranteed participation on the final day, why not just have four pairs with the top four players and play it as tiebreak tens over one hour, and crown them world champions.

I don't think we need to go down the route of looking at which players the man in the street would recognise. If that was the case, they might as well have plumped for Federer, Nadal and Serena. Although Sinner did ask if Serena was available...

I watched the first four games then turned off because it was such dull tennis...it just wasn't doubles. The crowd went crazy on the very rare occasions there was a net intercept. So glad the doubles team won this silly thing.
