The Anisimova versus Osaka match was too late even for a night bird like me to watch until the end. it will be fascinating to see how Anisimova gets on in the final. Her Wimbledon drubbing (6-0 5-0 loss) was only the third time that has ever happened in a Grand Slam final and only the second ever at Wimbledon. She has shown great resilience and got real revenge to beat Swiatek en route to the final here, and that should have got rid of some of the demons that must have plagued her after Wimbledon
I can only say what admirable mental strength that the drubbing she received from Swiatek did not appear to scar her and instead has made her dig deep and get some fabulous results here. She has had quite a tough route to the final I think - wins against Swiatek and Osaka show she is in fine form. I just hope in the final that she doesn't suffer another humiliating loss. Looking forward to it a lot and I really have no idea who will win. Sabalenka is of course an exceptional and very solid opponent.
I was there yesterday - both were good matches but I gave in at about 12pm local time as it was so late and it takes about 45 Mins from the stadium to the hotel.
Agree with the scheduling point. The first SF didnt actually start until about 7.15/7.20 and ended up finishing just after 9pm. They then did some ridiculous award ceremony which took at least 40 mins. It was to Venus or her foundation or some such but I couldnt really hear anything as there is so much noise! So the second SF didnt even get underway until just before 10pm
I mentioned in a previous post that i find it a funny tournament. . . .
Its obviously New York and its big and brash and noisy but I am finding it a little distracting to watch the tennis so its the general organisation that I am struggling with a bit.
In the highest levels of the stadium, there is zero stewarding and I mean zero. So there is no help for people to find their seats. People are wandering in and out all the time and then just stop randomly so you cant see the court. Even later in the session the same people still dont seem to know where their seats are - honestly its like being in a home for the bewildered.
And a lot of the crowd seem to be there for the being there rather really watching all of the tennis. Very different to IW where the fans seem to be much more knowledgeable and respectful (if I can use that term)
I was in the next layer down last night and this was much better and I got a more consistent view of the court and the actual play!
There again for the mens SF today (higher levels again!) and heading home tomorrow.
Although both were straight sets, two decent QFs today - I was at the USO for the first time today and for the next two days as well. Funny tournament, not sure whether i like it as much as some of the others i have been to.
Interesting, brittak
If you have the time, would love to know why it feels 'funny'
(No problem if not )
Enjoy your days !
(Do you watch the juniors at all?)
Hi CD - yes i watched a bit of Oli Bonding when he beat the second seed. I was quite impressed with him - he seemed pretty much in total control with some nice shots. Shame he couldnt follow it up the next day.
Anisimova playing with so much more freedom than at Wimbledon thankfully. Great ball striking from both women and crucially the American breaks to get in the board *1-2
