V. Kudermetova WR25 is struggling against J.Tjem WR149. Tjen won the first set, is a break up in the 2nd and very nearly went 2 breaks up. Whoever wins it looks encouraging for Emma.
Emma is 33 in the live rankings and another win could take her into the top 30.

It's gone to a decider, with Tjem currently 2-0*

Just caught the end - Tjen lived up to the hype.

Tjen must be full of confidence, in only one of her last 11 tournaments has she failed to reach the final. They ranged from W15 to W100.

Janice Tjen must be the first Indonesian player to make any impact on me since Yayuk Basuki. That goes back to the  late 1980's when Indonesia beat GB in the Fed Cup and Basuki later had a successful singles career.

There was Angeliique Widjaja in the 2000s. Though I'd forgotten her too, it just happened to say she was the last successful Indonesian on Tjen's Wikipedia page.

Eala just knocked out Tauson, so another seed falls in R1.

Another big success for the Rafa Nadal academy smile

Will Tjen beating V.Kudermetova make it easier or harder for Emma? On paper an opponent ranked 149 should be easier than one ranked 26 but Kudermetover is a known quantity who Emma has played and beaten before. Tjen has been playing the ITF circuit, reaching the final in ten of her last eleven tournaments. Her ranking must have been racing up but she has burst on the scene at the WTA level by qualifying for the US Open and then beating the 24th seed. So we don't really know how good she is likely to be. Qualifiers can be dangerous as Emma proved in 2021 and Tjen is threatening to do this year.

Given it was a close match and I would still think Kudermetova at her best would be better than Tjen at her best, I don't see Tjen as likely to be harder.

Keys goes out to Zarazua, but Ribakina looking good as she wins 3 & 0

To be fair, though, Rybakina was playing a 17 year old wildcard, born the same day as Hannah Klugman - ot was the easiest draw she could get

True, an easy draw, although Pareja is the No 1 junior, and probably would have been competitive in qualifying (SF in Bogota W250 in April)

Six seeds gone now including Keys, Svitolina and Tauson. I'm looking forward to three intriguing matches tomorrow for our Brits - Sonay and Katie B both start at 4pm, but should be a late evening clash for Fran. I'm fairly hopeful we will get at least one win, but I don't think any of the three matches are that easy to call, though Katie B will really have to play her best tennis to beat Kostyuk.

Did anyone see Venus play Muchova - it was amazing to see the old lady take Muchova to three sets, even though the third one was pretty comfortable for Muchova.

Yes, but I don't think you can just cite one SF, which was on clay, and with huge 'home' crowd support

After all, she lost easily in the QFs of a W35 in her next adult event, to a player outside the top-1000

It's cherry-picking to cite the 'good' one and not the 'bad' one

Kostyuk who plays Katie  is the only Ukrainian left in the main  draw as the others were all beaten in the 1st round.

Didn't see Venus but that looks rather impressive. My apologies to her for being so unsupportive of the announcement of her WC.
