Katies game is all over the place. Serve totally unreliable. Backhand horrible. Game plan non existent.
Kostyuk was there for the taking.

Or miles out - early break to Brazilian (are we allowed to call her a drug cheat or did she have some weird excuse/have I got the wrong player)

Oh this match has just got delightfully dramatic. Is it bad to hope the Brazilians cramps stay?

Haddad Maia got a time violation and then really gave the next game to Sonay.

What happened there? Haddad Maia was 30 love heading for 5-0 then she appeared to stop trying, took all the pace off her serve and handed the game to Sonay. What an odd game.

Thanx Jajon. Sonay looks like she's struggling between points too.

At least Sonay got a bit better over the US swing. Was a reasonable match, good battle, BHM defended well and deserved the win. Fun crowd dynamic too. Shame she couldn't get the game at *1-4 to make BHM sweat a bit, but too many poor shots. She had a pretty basic pass on the final match point and hit a backhand line that hit the bottom of the net. She was feeling her knee quite a bit, which has been strapped in other matches in the US but not today.

She could have probably taken out plenty of the lower ranked players so a shame she got a seed, but like Katie it was certainly a beatable one. And with the draw collapsing everywhere shame not to be contributing to the seed-killing.

Oh well, good money banked and onwards. Soon she actually has to start defending proper points so it will be interesting and exciting to watch her tackle that totally new aspect over the next 6 months.

Come on Fran, give us a cheer!

Both Sonay and Beatriz were cramping in the third set, Sonay pretty much from the start and Beatriz in the 5th game.

Can Sonay please just fire Jeremy Bates now and then get on with the rest of her tennis career, free and clear?

Yes he's impact is clear already! Some of her decision making has become notably strange this swing of events, or maybe I am just projecting!!

What a shame. I did wonder if the tennis God's were going to punish Haddad Maia for her levity in the fifth when she struggled to get to 5-1 in a 7, 8 minute game, whatever it was, but too many balls going wide from Sonay unfortunately.

So like Paul says it's over to Fran to save the day now.

She's still on the LTA Pro Scholarship programme, so might be a little difficult, even though she'll have some money behind her now.
