RE: US College chat 2025/26

Our British Gators done good in their first SEC match. Superb results. I have to admit I didn't give Gabs much chance when I saw the match up, but what do I know.

3: #23 Gabia Paskauskas (Florida) [WR UNR] d. #95 Angella Okutoyi (Auburn) [WR458] 6-0 6-4
4: Brooke Black (Florida) [WR741] d. Merna Reefat (Auburn) [WR624] 6-4 6-2

Unfortunately, the rest of the Florida team didn't match up to their standard and Auburn won, currently 4-2 with the remaining match being played out with Auburn up a set.

A great win for Talia too over the No 2 blue chip recruit, which got the team point that clinched a 4-2 win at Stanford. Good move to move her up to court 4. She had to come back at least twice from a break down in the final set while I was watching.

4: Talia Neilsen-Gatenby (Clemson) d. Tianmei Wang (Stanford) [WR 908] 1-6 6-2 7-5

Luca Pow (Wake Forest) moved down to singles 4, got a 6-7(5) 6-1 6-2 win
Charlie Robertson (Wake Forest) got his personal revenge against Luc Koenig (Baylor) for defeating him last week, with a 6-3 6-1 win

A number of SEC and ACC women's conference matches today

Ella Mcdonald (LSU) suffered her first defeat in college, playing at No 1 singles lost to #11 Emily Welker 4-6 6-7(4) - (LSU lost against Ole Miss with Cadence Brace and Kayla Cross off playing pros)

Kristina Paskauskas (Alabama) maintained her unbeaten spring season at No 1 singles with a 7-6(6) 6-4 win. She came back from 0-5 in the 1st set tie-break to take it. (Alabama d. Mississippi State 4-1)

Erin Pearce (Vanderbilt) took no prisoners as she got a 0 & 0 win at No 5 singles. She is joint leader for wins in the Vanderbilt team with 11 wins. (Vandy won 4-0)

Ohio State open Big Ten play with a 4-3 win over Oklahoma State, but Flora and Hep didn't get to play. Flora "won" her doubles and Hep "won" her singles by forfeit as Oklahoma State only had 5 players available.

Eva Shaw (Florida State) got their only singles win at No1 singles, 6-2, 7-6(8). Florida State lost to Notre Dame 2-4. I think with a 2-7 record and languishing at 216 in the latest live rankings it's fair to say they won't be making the NCAAs this year.

In a non-conference match, Savannah Dada-Mascoll (App State) looked a level above everyone else as she raced to a 6-1 3-0 lead before letting her foot off the gas and winning 6-1 6-3 against Wake Forest's No 1. Allegra Hodson (App State) at No 4 singles lost 2 & 5.

Ollie may have been wiser to have gone pro. He owned the No 1 court in San Diego for the previous two years, being unbeaten. He has just had his 2nd loss this year on it.

1: #32 Ollie Tarvet WR327 (San Diego) lost to #61 Spencer Johnson (UCLA) WR946 3-6 6-7(4)

Ella is also finding college tennis challenging; now on a run of 5 college matches without a win ( 1 loss, 4 unfinished ). Lots of errors today and having trouble with her serve. I counted at least 5 DFs in her first 2 service games. it's #1 Georgia next for LSU on Saturday. She'll need to be on top of her game for that one.

1: Ella Mcdonald/ Kayla Cross (LSU) def. Friedman/Buchwald (South Carolina) 6-4

3: Ella Mcdonald (LSU) vs Sara Borkop (South Carolina) 6-4 2-6 *0-1 unf.
#9 LSU def. #17 South Carolina 4-1
Dani Piani (SC) still not dressing to play. Don't know if she's injured or sitting the year out.

Brooke continues to impress with another 6-0 6-3 win at No 4 for Florida for a 5-2 record in her 6 weeks. It's the 3rd time in her last 4 matches she has finished first, with the other finishing 2nd and the first team point for Florida. Prior to that she got a 6-2 win in doubles to be 5-0 for the year with her partner Valery Gynina.
Gabia split sets 6-2 3-6. With her game with long rallies she will always struggle to finish in dual matches that are stopped at clinch point. I can see a world before long where Brooke swaps with Gabia in the line-up but the coach may want to keep Brooke at No 4 for whats seeming like a likely team point.

2: Brooke Black/Valery Gynina (Florida) def. Gomez/Schafer (Arkansas) 6-2

3: #23 Gabia Paskauskas (UF) vs. Anet Koskel (Arkansas) 6-2 3-6 Unf.
4: Brooke Black (UF) def. Alexandra Panagiotidou (Arkansas) 6-0 6-3
#46 Florida def. Arkansas 4-0
Next for Florida is #7 Oklahoma at home on Saturday

At the same time Kristina was playing and lost her singles.
1: Kristina Paskauskas / Karla Bartel (Alabama) def. Zhu / Hammond (Kentucky) 6-2

1: #53 Kristina Paskauskas (Bama) lost to #119 Julia Zhu (UK) 6-7 1-6
#29 Alabama def. Kentucky 4-3
Next for Alabama is #14 Tennessee at home. That'll be tough for Kristina who will be due to play Katrina Scott WR284 who finally made her debut for Tennessee yesterday. But for challenges like this is, I presume, why she chose to transfer to a team in the strongest conference where she would be their No1.

Just to add to the Brooke narrative, I see she was Freshman of the Week and they had a big poster of her up:

Thanks Lambda - remind me, and the other less initiated, how do these conference matches count at the moment? do the conference winners qualify for the NCAA teams finals in (May?)? And how is the May team event made up?

thank you - and sorry if youve explained before, I find my college knowledge goes in one year and out the other!

To be honest Jon it doesn't really matter to us if its a conference or non-conference match. All matches count towards the national rankings which determines qualification for the NCAA. Conference matches also count towards the conference table which determines seedings for the Conference Championships and bragging rights for being top of the table.
With the way the rankings work who the opponents are and what their ranking is is what matters for the rankings, and after the National Indoors most of the schedule is set to be against the team's conference opponents. That matters because the stronger the conference the more ranking points are available to those teams. The SEC in both the men's and women's this year are strong and most of the big ranking points opportunities are in the SEC conference matches whereas the likes of TCU and San Diego men will have little opportunity for big ranking points in their conference matches because their conferences are relatively weak.
