RE: Week 39 - WTA1000 Beijing, China - Hard

I too had to go out during the tie break, Emma still playing a great level of tennis. Shocked to see the bagel.

But I was massively heartened to see that level. It was above anything she's produced before.

I believe these near misses will make her stronger, and that is what she needs.

As for Sonay she is now producing higher level tennis. Never mind #2, I can see her running Emma close if she continues to improve at this rate

I hadn't appreciated, though, that in live rankings looking out to the end of the WTA Tour season, Fran is actually sitting as GB number 2 - she doesnt have any more points to lose, Sonay has around 150 (based on how far she has got this week so far ie live rankings) and Katie has a fair amount more.

At 5 weeks point, LTR has it:

Emma 1563 - playing Wuhan, Ningbo, Tokyo

Fran 912 - playing nothing, Osaka Qualies, Guangzhou

Sonay 842 - playing Wuhan qualies, Osaka qualies, Guangzhou

Katie 754 - playing Wuhan qualies, Osaka MD, then nothing

So not dissimilar schedules really in terms of opportunity to pick up points

Yes I've mentioned elsewhere before that Fran was 2nd for points earned this year ( not that I'm expecting anyone to read all of my wittering ).

Though Sonay has now got to a R16 win over Andreeva here from overtaking Fran for that. Simples

Hsieh and Ostapenko won their L16 match, as in the first round via a MTB.

QF:- Tereza Mihalikova (SVK) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR64 (34+30) v Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE) / Jelena Ostapenko (LAT) CR19 (11+8) [4]

They met in Madrid, Rome and the Australian Open this year, with three straight set wins to the seeds.

There's still one L16 to be played today. The men's tournament finishes today, so they need to hold back matches to fill the later days. Probably 2 singles QF and 2 doubles QF tomorrow and Friday?

Sonay seems to be giving Andreeva a good battle here. Shes right in it.

And takes the first set - great passing shot in that last game (although the DF and UEs from Mirra did help too)
