Week 47 - ITF W75 - Sydney, Australia Hard

Just didn't seem right that she was competing here after the long successful week she had in Brisbane. History and reports on her matches last week pointed to her being unlikely to get through this week, and that such issues occurred in her first match does ask more questions.

So what was it about?

Really trying to give herself a tough follow-up test? - that would seem foolhardy, indeed with the potential to set her back.

Trying to make Aus Open Q - maybe that was more of the issue / too much of the issue? Now, I know I have been posting re potential Aus Open qualifiers, indeed started a thread, included Katie and agreed that it was a possibility, I come at that largely from my tennis stats interest and have said that ultimately her ongoing health and fitness still had to come first. So maybe have it well in mind but be prepared to step back.

Now, so much is speculation and perhaps Katie was really confident about going again but there did seem enough signs in Brisbane to at least from afar question how wise that choice was.

Such a pity. I actually spoke to Katie's mum at Wimbledon Q and yes there was real confidence that that person she was referred to last year had got to the bottom of some stuff many others had missed over the years, indeed gone down the wrong road. So renewed hope, mixed with irritation at so many lost years. I soo hope that the difference is enough that she can continue and at least get back into the top 200 but it is not yet proving the panacea to her looking like she will truly ever get to where her sheer talent could take her and perhaps too much damage has been done long in the past for that ever to be possible. It would just be great if it could prove otherwise.

Yes, it's so puzzling that decision to compete at Sydney. She almost certainly knew that competing would aggravate the injury at some point and that would effectively end the season. So I guess she must have thought that a week's rest wasn't going to clear the issue and decided to play until the aggravation came and that turned out to be the next match.

Hey ho, end of her season and what a great one it was smile

I presume she was travelling to Sydney with Alex anyway so maybe she thought she might as well give it a go while she was on such a good run? Then when it proved to be too much she retired. I don't see a problem. And she's still on the entry list for Playford so we don't yet know whether she has finished her season.

Destanee Aiava, who Swan beat a few matches back, also retired from her 1st Rd match in this tournament, after just 3 games. Did anyone see what happened?

It's a shame for Katie but it was a surprise she hadn't pulled out of of Sydney.

Many on the forum (including me) like to speculate on injuries, and i'm going to try and minimise mine ..

As emmsie69 says the back injury happened 12 years ago and so Katie has been playing tennis professionally all this time with the scar tissue from that injury, and was about to retire. The person referred to her last year was the last hope and genuinely made a difference which enabled her to return to playing professionally. but the scar tissue remains and so there will never be a situation where it has gone.

One of the principal areas was to the left intercostals and Katie would for years touching these during matches, obviously feeling discomfort. But the retirements usually followed signs of back-related pain, sometimes shoulders. These different areas may indicate multiple areas of scar tissue or areas of vulnerability because of compensating.

Only Katie can feel what she has felt at moments during the Australian swing. What she has exhibited though are different signs to those she has displayed over the years. This week she has had issues with her hamstrings which are related to stiffness in the obliques. It is isn't surprising given the sustained level of tennis she has played is higher than anything for over a year.

But amazingly the stiffness in her obliques did not prevent her continuing. Even more they didn't prevent her from starting in Sydney. I just feel that was one match too many, when what was needed was rest and maybe a trip to see the therapist. But hey, Alex was playing and maybe she thought she'd give it a try.

i expect that with work on her body, she'll be back, and able to play a carefully programme in 2026 which will take her into the top 200, and perhaps higher. We'll see ..

Katie surely knows her own body best, obviously it's disappointing she retired and AO qualifying seems unlikely now but she would hardly have played this week if she didn't feel up to it. From her Instagram post afterwards summing up her progress this year she still seems to be thinking positively so hopefully it's not too serious.
