2026 British Tennis Forum PoM/PoS overview thread (for the Sir Andy Murray Trophy)

Seems fair enough to just list the PoM successes or Slam titles that get players onto the PoS list.

An important thing is indeed as you indicate, that when it actually comes to the PoS vote, all players will be under consideration for what they achieve throughout the season, not just the PoM(s) or Slam titles that got them onto the PoS list in the first place - these are just part of their season stories.

1) That couldn't really be summarised until just before the PoS vote, and 2) I can understand a reluctance to attempt season summaries for all the contenders from a variety of tennis areas - eg. senior, junior, college, wheelchair, disability

I reckon that would be too much to ask of anyone. I think it's fine as is, leaving folk to their own thoughts and any research they wish to do. The only other possibility that comes to mind is whether if a number of folk would prefer season summaries, whether different forum members could do summaries for areas that they have more interest in and are fairly on top of?

I think that this thread is just fine as it is.

Season summaries are a great idea. I for one would be happy to cover the women players, especially the doubles players.

Im sure we can work a plan. I did try and do it one year for PoS and it was hard work; I ended up just putting basic stats like ranking change, win / loss, and my concern was we would get different levels of narrative quality for 28 players that usually qualify for PoS! Some would do more work than others in putting their narrative together! If we can overcome that, we could make it work as a communal effort!

 Just following up on the idea of season summaries for PoS. 

At the end of November, we know most of the PoS field - the only ones missing are December PoM qualifiers ( x2?) and wild card qualifiers (3 last year if I recall). But out of the field of 28, 23 were known. Also, December actually doesn't involve much play if any from the majority of the players who are already qualified, if any. 

So, 80-90% of the field is set and most of their season's story is complete. 

We could set a few ground rules on the narrative write ups - a minimum/maximum number of words or characters for example, to ensure that someone doesn't do a marvellous Tolstoy-esque write up on the one hand and someone go all Ernest Hemingway on the other - and we could set any comments on rankings changes over the year to be up to a certain date to and from for consistency (week 1 to week 48 say, with a quick update for week 52 if something changes). 

If we set that timescale and franchised out the activity, 23 players could be spread across say 6 or volunteers to maybe do 4 each, if people were willing.

It might then, once done, become a resource for the future if people like the PoM and PoS write ups as a thing. 

One to consider but would need half a dozen or so volunteers willing to put in a couple of hours maybe in early December. We could agree a process to capture them behind the scenes eg PM them directly to me to capture into my master sheet.

 I am thinking of potentially changing the qualifying criteria for the Player of the Season vote. Currently, there are the above 12 players qualified. Players can qualify by:

1) Winning or being Runner Up in the monthly PoM votes.

2) Winning one of the 15 grand slam titles (MS/WS/MD/WD/XD/JBS/JGS/JBD/JGD/WCMS/WCWS/WCQS/WCMD/WCWD/WCQD)

3) Being year end British number one in any of MS/WS/MD/WD/JB/JG/WCMS/WCWS/WCQS

4) Through the wildcard vote in December

The one I am wondering about is the year end British number one qualifying. Do all 9 categories listed deserve a place or should the year end number one status be limited to , say, just the 4 senior categories ie mens and womens singles and doubles? Many of the number ones may qualify through PoM votes anyway, although Henry Patten is the only one qualified currently. Or should the year end number ones get entry into the wild card vote instead and I take out the automatic qualifying right to the main PoS and , instead, offer an additional wild card entry or two into the PoS vote itself

Just a thought, which wouldnt structurally change anything in terms of running the PoS vote itself. And it certainly won't have affected any of the votes to date as I suspect no one will have had this in mind 

So, any thoughts on:

1) Direct entry or not into PoS vote for year end British number ones?

2)  or maybe just some of the current categories?

3) automatic entry instead into the wild card vote?

4) one or two more entries through the wild card vote into PoS as a consequence?

Any comments welcomed!

Personally I'd leave as is, that any of these 9 y/e #1s listed should go directly into the PoS vote.

Not something I've got particularly strong feelings on, but aeems to me bodies of work worth that recognition, and since you ask ...

 Its a fair point and I suppose being number does imply you had the best season of all, pound for pound, as a body of work. 

Maybe I will take a call to add a wild card place or two once I see how it all falls. If we need to, a field of 32 is perfectly manageable and probably is neater in terms of structure. 4 groups of 8 instead of 4.

To reconfirm how players qualify for the Player of the Season in 2026

1) Player of the Month winners

2) Any British grand slam winner of the 15 events played at all slams (MS, WS, MD, WD, XD, JBS, JGS, JBD, JGD, MWCS, WWCS, QWCS, MWCD, WWCD, QWCD)

3) end of season British number ones in world rankings (MS, WS, MD, WD, JB, JG, MWCS, WWCS, QWCS)

4) Player of the month runners up and ties.

5) Those who are successful in wild card vote held at the end of December

For most seasons now, this has resulted in a field of 28 players or pairs, teams.
At the end of Wimbledon, 12 had qualified for the 2026 POS vote. I suspect it will be similar this year although the wild card numbers are manipulated to land on the right number of POS finalists.

I raised the question above of British number ones and have decided to stick with those as a means to qualify. As I will the others for this year. However, someone raised PoM runners up and ties in the recent consultation and whether that was valid as an ongoing route into PoS. It will remain so for 2026 but I think that will be the main current category to review going into 2027 and whether we keep that. If I / we determine it should be dropped in 2027, other categories of qualification may need to come in, although I havent considered what they may be at this point. I will probably put this topic up for discussion later in the year.
