Para Tennis 2026

Copying this from the 2025 thread

Hi,

I have been very preoccupied with winter illnesses and other things. There is another serious problem that has come up. So sorry I have not seen this thread until now. I usually get an email that a post has been made, but have seen none.

The truth is that we find out things at the last minute. Sometimes too late. Although, I believe there might be an event around the Nottingham Open.

Anna is playing in the AO this month. However, preparation has been a disaster. Chest infections, one after another left Anna with bruised ribs. She was not able to train for 6 weeks. The awful weather has got in the way in the UK and Oz. We arrived in Sydney on the 11th of Jan and it has rained so much that Anna has hardly seen a ball. The tournament she entered there was rained out and she did not get on court last Friday, Sat and Sun. She got onto court on Monday afternoon for a short sets match that she could not finish. So she retired at 1-2 40-15 so she could catch the plane to Brisbane. It was sunny in Brisbane and Melbourne the whole time it was flooding in Sydney.

It is sunny in Brisbane where we are now, so Anna is trying to make up for lost time this week.

Thanks Annas Dad. Hopefully Anna will get a match or two in Brisbane and then feel a little more ready for the AO. What event is Brisbane, is that an ITF event of some sort or a more local Australian event?

Hi,

There were no tournaments in Brisbane that we could get to work. Anna is friends with Archie Graham, the Oz number 1. So she likes to come here to see him and train. She likes Brisbane and insisted on coming here. We are staying near Club Coops and she has got a short term membership, which gives her access to the courts, gym and pool

To date they have only livestreamed the finals at the AO. This is not like TV viewing, but is good enough. The World and Global games usually have more streaming throughout the event, but the viewing and quality is not always the best. It really depends on the venue and its facilities.

You also get to see the ii2 and ii3 matches at the World and Global Games.

How is preparation going Anna's Dad? And who's your pick in the men's draw?

The preparation is going quite well. Just a touch of tennis elbow, which comes from lack of court time followed by court time.

In the men's I would say that the winner could be any of the top 4. Archie at his home event will be favourite though. Anna hit with him yesterday and he is playing well. Dom is dangerous on hard courts. The strongest ever men's line up will mean some funny early draws that could provide upsets.

In the women's it will probably be one of the top 2. Eva is desperate to beat Anna and always bring her strong brother as a training partner, so she never has a problem finding people to hit with. Eva is strongest on the clay, but has spent a lot of time practicing on the hard. She also arrived earlier this year, so if both get to the final we expect that to be a tough match.

Here are the draws for the Intellectual Disability Slam

tournaments.tennis.com.au/tournament/F2498461-06F7-4887-92A5-E4449C929005/draw/1
tournaments.tennis.com.au/tournament/F2498461-06F7-4887-92A5-E4449C929005/draw/2

They've only seeded two players in each draw, so the first round in the men's is Archie Graham Vs Dominic Iannotti because Dominic isn't seeded!

Despite being world champion if I am correct?!

Thanks Jonathan - play looks like it begins Friday with finals on Sunday.

Yes, there is a strange seeding/ranking system that uses points over a number of years. 8 player draws only have 2 seeds. The 4 GB boys made the first round draw very tricky, as they avoid pairing them together and everyone expected the Dom v Archie matchup.

The women's draw is a bit top heavy in the top half and the 7th/8th players get to play each other in the bottom half of the draw.

Play is always Fri, Sat and Sun at the end of the AO.

At least it won't be mid 40's C during play this year!

OOP

Para, loads of Brits. The new Oz lad looks like a good player

https://tournaments.tennis.com.au/tournament/f2498461-06f7-4887-92a5-e4449c929005/Matches

Deaf, but no Brits this time

https://tournaments.tennis.com.au/tournament/a8653341-0326-4416-8997-c83b0cea0469/Matches

There is also for the first time a blind and low vision event. I don't think there is a draw for this as it contains many categories

Sinner walked past me twice as Anna was helping out the blind training at the Melbourne Park NTC. Of course Sinner practiced on the furthest away indoor court. Anna saw him as he left the centre

Edit, for those who use a VPN, you can connect to https://www.9now.com.au/live/channel-9 The VPN needs to be connected to Melbourne and have no ad blocking. My VPN triggered the ad blocking message but of course while here I can just turn it off.  Also, you need to create an account. I used Vic 3000 as the postcode. There are no guarantees, as I have no idea if VPN's are blocked. But it is worth a try

It is a proper TV channel with good commentary of the main matches. I can see that all the outside courts are to be streamed. Hopefully, the finals will be livestreamed without geo-blocking

Fabrice Higgins upset Oliver Beadle to reach the mens final, where he plays Archie Graham , the Aussie top seed.

Anna McBride won her semi at a canter and plays French second seed, Eva Blanc, in the final.

Good luck to both of them. They are also both in with a chance of the singles and doubles double

Anna has had a shoulder impingement this week from a long term issue. But she has managed that well considering and has had plenty of physio support. .

It was hot this morning with very strong sun. Anna collapsed on court through over heat in her first doubles today. Her body temp was over 40c, with a very high heart rate. The medical person said that the short duration between her singles semi to the dubs meant her body temp had not come down.
A medical timeout, an ice towel and a sudden drop in temps allowed her to recover. They were 2-0 down by then.
The medical person said that she was lucky that a sudden temp drop was about to happen. As she would have had to retire otherwise.
The temps did drop quickly and Anna and Kelly won 6-4 6-1 in the end.

In he dubs virtual final against the 1st seeds, Kelly could not get a ball over the net in the first three games and they were 3-0 down. A change of tactics saw them end up at 4-4 after the 2nd rain delay. So they resume at 11pm UK time.

The final is not before 3am UK time. Strong winds are forecast. Anna is guaranteed first or second in the singles and dubs.

Fab actually is the stronger player, but bad days at the office at the wrong time have cost ranking points. Fab has the same as Anna, first or second in both events.
He plays Oz, Archie the world number one in the final. His partner Dom will be first or second in the dubs.

Olly will also be first or 2nd in the dubs with his Oz partner Archie. So a Brit is certain to win the men's dubs event.

Thanks for the update, Anna's Dad!

Do you feel confident Anna can deal with Eva in the final?
