RE: Week 2- ITF W50 Manchester - Indoor Hard

A tightly fought final (after the first 10 games, anyway). Alicia continues her fine doubles form

F:- Alicia Dudeney (GBR) / Elena Malygina (EST) CR690 (279+411) def Emily Appleton (GBR) / Weronika Falkowska (POL) CR207 (87+120) [1] 1-6 7-6(6) 10-7

Mika though is stronger willed at the moment, and a real fighter.

However, she has just been broken back by a fired up Bandecchi when serving fot the match. Though Mika was less than happy about the DF call that clinched that break after a long game.

5-5*

Yes, good of Mika to keep her cool after missing all those MPs (she was wrong about the line call, IMO - and our camera is perfectly placed but - again - she did well not to get TOO sidetracked by it)

And she played a solid TB, unlike her opponent who started badly and then it's difficult to stop

Good job, Mika

She is a good fighter our Mika. Tenacious today and deserving of the win.

Yes she seems to have a good temperament. The most positive thing for me is that she has the foundations of a good game but there is still a lot she can improve on which makes her a very interesting prospect. Which I guess is what you'd expect from a player of her age and experience.

Like you HarryG, it's one of the most promising things about Mika, and Hannah too

18-24 months ago, there was lots of good but, just taking two examples, Mika's movement and Hannah's two-handed backhands were a nightmare

Now both are MILES better

Both of them have a lot of skills, good qualities, exciting prospects

But both also have a lot to work on

It's very rough and ready, but makes you feel very upbeat going forward

Unlike Mimi, who may well do better, but is more rounded, more polished, fewer obvious weaknesses to improve on

(Remember, Katie O'Brien (I think it was) in her round-up of the three of them saying: Mimi is the most hard-working, Mika is the most obstinate and Hannah is the most playful/fun (can't remember without looking up the exact word for Hannah but something like that). But Mimi's work ethic shows - but does it diminish the upside? Or does it mean the upside is higher because the talent to work hard is just as important a talent as natural timing?)

The top three seeds have all lost today, and Dodin is still going (as paulisi predicted a few days ago !)

Mika ended up in a tiebreak

At 2-3 down, she played an amazing defensive point - no way she should have won it

And that was the critical moment

She won 7-6(5)

Good stuff.

Mika wins her 3rd TB this week and 7th in a row since October.

I'm not convinced the seedings are a fair reflection.

Dodin is on a comeback after 9 months out and was a top 100 player

Naef was ranked just outside the top 100 and the Bulgarian was a Wimbledon junior finalist who doesnt have a full quota of points.

Even Mika is ranked just below her opponent, but again Mika is a junior US Open winner and doesnt have a full quota of points

If you are going to quote Barthel as a top 100 player, then she has been stuck for some time to get through the 250 ranking.

Was ever thus, at least to some extent. The seedings are of course a fair result of the rankings at entry.

 I agree

All rankings are - by definition, really - 6 months out of date (being an average of the last 12 months)

Which makes a huge difference, in particular, to youngsters and people coming back from injury

As you say, youngsters don't have a full quota, and

Dodin was out of competition for about 10 months (some funny inner ear thing, I think, and also the infamous cosmetic surgery) so is obviously completely wrong

Mika will now enter the GB top 10 for the first time - long may she stay there. The final would take her to #9, the title to #8.

Up to a further CH - live 278.

Only an 8 points in February and 3 one pointers due off before May.

Look at it any way you like - the three seeds are now out of Mika's path, which is where I was heading, rather than discussing the ranking system !

QF:- Mika Stojsavljevic (GBR) WR 290 def Anouck Vrancken Peeters (NED) WR289 [8] 7-6(5) 6-4

*****

SF:- Mika Stojsavljevic (GBR) WR 290 v Elizara Yaneva (BUL) WR365

Yaneva has dropped a set in every match his week, so dont be suprised if it goes to 3 sets.

Just a correction ref rankings - Mika now has a full set of counters, but lots of 1pts and 2pts which will get upgraded (i suspect)

You were right first time. It is a maximum of 18 to count these days and Mika will now be up to 16 counters including five 1s and one 2.
