Weeks 3 & 4 - Grand Slam, Australian Open - Melbourne (outdoor hard)

Fran out retired 2-6 2-3. Sad to report - she started OK and was 2-1 up in the first set, but it all went a bit Pete Tong after that and the first set was over in about half an hour. Looked like she might be making a fight of it in the second after the medical time out, but not to be.

Similar to yesterday - I just missed it. Watched Gauff, got some lunch and headed over to court 15 only to find Fran had just retired cry never mind, watching Demon on Rod Laver now and will see if I can get to watch a bit of Jake later.

I didn't think Fran would necessarily win today, but I did hope she'd finish the match. So rough for her to go through this every event.

What a shame for Fran. I hope it's nothing too serious and she can get fit again soon.

That is sad for Fran. Hope she recovers soon. So far is it 5 who have retired?

Fran retired with a glute injury according to the BBC. Last week she retired with a groin injury.

Interesting comments from Fran regarding the number of retirements she has had over her career

"I don't relate to any of the retirements directly to what could be referred to as 'kid with a syndrome'," Jones said.

"What I relate it to is that I don't think I had a team in place and the expertise that I needed from a younger age.

"So my age might say 25, but my physical journey, I'm still quite early in."
