L128: (Q) Arthur Féry WR 186 defeated (20) Flavio Cobolli (ITA) WR 22 by 7-6(1) 6-4 6-1
Very brief summary by the Beeb of what happened in Melbourne on Day 1:
In the men's singles, world number one Carlos Alcaraz came through his tournament opener against Australia's Adam Walton in straight sets.
2025 finalist Alexander Zverev came from a set down to beat Canada's Gabriel Diallo in four sets while fellow seeds Alexander Bublik, Francis Tiafoe, Francisco Cerundolo and Corentin Moutet all advanced without dropping a set.
Italy's 20th seed Flavio Cobolli was the only men's seed to fall, with British qualifier Arthur Fery triumphing 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 6-1. Fellow Brit Cameron Norrie also booked his spot in round two, although he had to come through a five-set battle with France's Benjamin Bonzi.
Emma, of course, came through her testing (because of the less-than-ideal scheduling as the second night match on her court after Bublik/Brooksby, which could very easily have gone to five sets instead of finishing 4, 4 & 4) first round match by 4 & 1.
The Beeb's report on Arthur's match. Includes a bit about his background.
Love the fact the Sunday Times are even going in for plays on words - it was, indeed, a Fery tale ending
Of course, all the facts have been posted on this forum many a time - it's always good when we're ahead of the game
His father set up Chenavair Investment Managers, in the City, which specialises in fixed income European investments, and has several billion under management (his football club ownership is a 'sideline', so to speak)
I think the parents got divorced quite recently, though - in 2022, I read.
Always thought it slightly strange that his siblings don't play tennis at all (or not to my knowledge) - I know his sister is a track and field girl (although Lambda might know more about her level - I'm not sure about US college results). The brother did Maths at Imperial, but no idea about sport.
For anybody confined to free-to-air viewing (like me!), there will be an hour's highlights of today's play at the AO from 23.00 to midnight on Quest (now on Freeview channel 17) tonight. I can't believe that they won't be devoted primarily to Arthur's, Cam's & Emma's matches...
Yes, first time I've been here (or to Australia for that matter) - recommend it highly
Yes, it is a great site and kind of more laid back than Wimbledon I thought. I was there in 2020 - I watched Heather lose in 1st round, Jo Konta retire in first round and Dan lose in second round, all a trifle disappointing but I did like the vibe of the place and walked there everyday from Richmond.

I think Melbourne is my favourite city anywhere. I was there way back in 2009 for just a week around the Australian Grand Prix, which itself was so accessible in Albert Park - as is the Aus Open site beside the Yarra ( not been to the Open though ).
Yes, great vibe in the city, have a walk along the Yarra wirh a coffee break, trams to the beach.
I felt Sydney, which I have spent longer in, is to visit, Melbourne is to stay in - I wish.
After watching Demon win I headed to court 12 in the hope of watching Jake, but the queue to get on was too long so have ended up having to settle for Jovic v Volynets next door. And now I see Jake has lost the first set 7-2 in the TB. Today is not going well

I managed to see the tiebreak which Jake lost but standing in blazing sunshine which I wouldnt be able to stand for too long. Moved to the queue for the shady side but is moving very slowly. Jake is already 1-3 down so not looking good.
Jake fighting back, first two sets were actually v close at 7-6 7-5 and then he took the third 6-3 and is 31 up in the fourth, looking to pull it into a fifth. He could do this.
