Emma played well in the first set, and very nearly took the second. I did think if it went to a decider though she just would not have enough in the tank. She was the superior player really but just not enough energy to get the win today. Such a shame.
Still surprised she chose to play, perhaps trying primarily to avoid a zero counter and secure a top 24 seeding for IW?

A single win would have added to her ranking points total. If she had managed that then she could decide whether to play another match or withdraw.
Didnt take long for her to throw in the first retirement
Tbf she was apoarently ill last week.and ran out of energy then ( and saw it out ) and again faded here after starting out looking good
Whatever the possible ranking ( or monetary - really? ) motivations to play it didn't look the cleverest idea to me, but as said maybe she felt much better coming in.

Yes. I can see the motivation for trying but in the event it turned out to be a bad choice. She still has her name down for Abu Dhabi, I hope she is fully recovered by then as a succession of retirements would only bring out the critics.

They'll criticise her if withdraws as well, even if she's ill. The only way she'll ever silence her critics is if she manages to win another slam. I feel really sorry for her.
215 points, and that will be a new CH for both of them. They are currently in a battle for places 20= to 22= with Bucsa and Hunter, who are also through to the QF's.

They last played in Beijing last year with Hsieh and Ostapenko winning 4 & 3. Similar results in Rome and Madrid
Is it particularly tougher than the match they have just won?
Great stuff
Well I think it is. H&O have been playing together regularly and always seem to win these match-ups with a bit to spare. Krejikova hasnt been playing a lot of doubles (this is third tournament since the USO), has often played with Ostapenko but won in Korea with Siniakova.
