Disappointing to see Katie go out here in qualifying, especially as she was the top seed, and so unlucky to have to compete in the qualies and not to make the main draw by right.

The upside though is she seems to be playing better again this year, and maybe she could get a lucky loser spot, if someone pulls out.

I do feel like Katie is going to do better this season - at the end of last season, I started to feel that maybe mentally she wasn't fully focussed, but the change of coach seems to have done her a world of good, and I think there are still some positives to be taken from here - Tomova is a decent player, as was her Andorran opponent, so losing such a close match isn't a total distaster, and I would be a lot more downhearted if she had succumbed easily in straight sets.

It was indeed a pity that Katie was ever in qualifying - it always looked a jeopardy she could have done without as against a MD slot and a probably reasonable R1 draw in the 96 women field.

As I said earlier, maybe great prep in retrospect if she came through, but in advance I was never sold on qualifying as the preferable option.

I watched a lot of the game from this point on. The second set could have gone either way, but Katie started making more errors in the important points. After she lost set two, she was missing way too many shots in the third set against a player who was very good at keeping the ball in play, with the result seeming inevitable to everyone (including Katie).

Hopefully, she can nab an LL place and show us her true potential.

One LL space has already opened up and taken by someone else

Not very good doubles draws

R32:- Emma Raducanu (GBR) / Elena-Gabriella Ruse (ROU) CR342 (262+80) v Katerina Siniakova (CZE) / Taylor Townsend (USA) CR12 (3+9) [3]

R32:- Tereza Mihalikova (SVK) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR46 (23+23) v Lludmyla Kichenok (UKR) / Desirea Krawczyk (USA) CR51 (28+33)
Four points outside the seeding, but in the section with the #5 and #4 seeds.
650 points to defend from reaching the final last year, with only 10 point non-counters to fallback on, so dropping 9 places in live rankings immediately.

Oh well. Who was it on this board that said playing qualies is always a bit of a lottery?

Maybe me? Not enormously surprised Katie didn't make it through qualies. IW conditions can be tricky, especially against a player who isn't missing much. It gets very blustery on those outside courts, and while the balls flies quickly through the desert air, the surface itself is relatively slow.

Not ideal for a big ball striker like Katie. Anyway hope she gets a LL spot, and Miami might be a happier hunting ground. At least seems in much better shape than last year

Liv and Tereza are the fourth and last match on the same court, following another women's singles.
