An article in The Times Saturday suggests that Serena Williams will be seeking a wildcard into the main draw of the singles at Wimbledon.
It's disrespectful and selfish for the Williams sisters to treat the majors as their hobby playground. There are many players trying to make a career and survive on the tour that need the experience and prize money for financial viability that dont benefit from multi million dollar endorsement deals. To deny them the opportunity just because they want to have some fun, can't give it up is just selfish. This is a premier event on the professional tour, not, as co-pilot put it, a nostalgia exhibition. Sure people want to see them and they'll generate far more media coverage than the alternatives which is why they're guaranteed wild cards if they ask, but there are other ways for these majors to showcase their talents and honour their legacy than take up a valuable spot in the draw.
If the Williams sisters and Maja get WCs that leaves 5 for Fran, Harriet, Swan, Mika and Mimi, leaving Alicia, Hannah or the next alternate missing out - not as I've said before I think Hannah should be in the frame for one. I know there is belief that Fran won't need one, and I'm confident they'll be 2 withdrawals that she would need to move her to the main draw, but I'm not confident they'll happen before qualifying starts.
After reading this thread the following advert came up on my FB account (!)
ALERTIX.APP
Wimbledon ticket alert app alerts you instantly when tickets become available for Centre, Ct 1, Ct2.
You pay for how often you want alerts £2.50 every 10 mins, £5 every 5 mins, £10 every 10 seconds.

Only for those who entered the ballot.
Genuine or not?
Who knows but you'd have to pay the £10 to have any chance. I spent hours refreshing my screen last year (did get tickets in my basket a few times) and in my experience you've got about 2 seconds to grab them. Even when they come up, by the time you've clicked the number of tickets required, they've already gone.
It takes major commitment to get them.
It's worth remembering though that people get them in their basket then sometimes don't bother completing the purchase so the tickets pop back up again 10 minutes later.
I think the fact she would be seeded in the main draw is a relevant distinction, and one the AELTC will think about.
Maja's ranking is high enough to be seeded now. However based on the rankings of 6 weeks ago her ranking was too low for Wimbledon direct entry. If she had to play qualifying and failed to qualify there would be no problem. However were she to come through qualifying she would not be seeded when she should have been. This situation arises because the entry list is based on rankings 6 weeks before the tournament and seedings based on rankings the week before. The two are not compatable in the situation that could arise here.

I agree Lambda. Would it be cynical to think that keeping one's lucrative sponsorship deals for yet another year is a whole lot easier with an appearance in tennis whites at the home of tennis on national TV in the kit bag.

It's hardly the Williams sister doing that
It's disrespectful of the LTA or the AELTC if they wish to give wildcards - no one is forcing their arms
If the Williams ask for a wildcard, and the powers that be say yes, then the Williams sisters are perfectly entitled to think that's what the federation wants, they think it's a good idea (and it's obviously true)
Your argument can only be with the LTA / AELTC - it's their job to decide how to support GB players, how to maximise spectator satisfaction etc
That's not the Williams sisters' job
You could say it's disrespectful and selfish of some of our players to keep taking zillions of wildcards, riding the gravy train and never making it into the top-50, say
(I don't agree with either - just to be clear - there's no disrespect from either the poor GB players or the elderly Williams sisters (obviously both the GB players and the Williams sisters are selfish as they're both acting for self) - it's the federation that is in control, your beef is with them)
I think we have a little way to go to see how GB potential candidates perform on grass. So far only Mika has had a break out run. Katie S seems to have done enough, subject to her keeping healthy. The rest may get them but the good it will do them from a development perspective might be questionable.
Indeed CD, well put IMO. Quite apart from the Williams sisters being condemned in such terms when we don't even know if either or both are seeking singles WCs that are in the gift of others.
If Tatjana Maria can be snubbed for a Queen's WC as defending champion then there's no reason to think the LTA/AELTC would feel obligated to give one to Venus, Serena or Chwalinska either.
Wimbledon will be competing in the attention economy with a football World Cup this year, and a wildcard for Serena would make worldwide front and back page headlines.
Given that Chwalinska is actually ranked around 20, and that she was the standout star of RG, she certainly deserves a MDWC also.
That would leave 6 for Brits - and if Fran makes the cut, then Harriet, Mika, Xu, Swan makes 4, and...

Alicia Dudeney?, and...
Klugmann?, Watson?, Burrage?
Many suggestions are that Serena is just looking to play doubles, though yes if she asked for a singles WC she'd probably get it - again that's up to the AELTC. I'd be crossing off Burrage. I do like Jodie but she has done nothing on the singles court since her return to suggest that would be a good idea.
I do hope Alicia gets one and personally think she should. If it does come down to Heather vs Hannah for a WC that would be interesting with two players coming from two very different angles. I actually suspect that one way or another Hannah is going to end up with one.
The best outcome would be that Serena doesn't want one, Fran gets into the MD, and that there are 7 for Brits - Harriet, Mika, Mimi, Katie S, Alicia, Hannah, and Heather, plus one for Chwalinska.
