And beat the third seed he did - just:

L32:  (Q) Alastair Gray WR 293 defeated (3) Petr Bar Biryukov (***) WR 337 by 6-7(5) 6-4 7-6(3)  smile

*****

L16:  (Q) Alastair Gray WR 293 vs Manish Sureshkumar (IND) WR 829 (CH = 508 in November 2018)

Biryukov won't be sleeping well after that one. Had two match points on Ali's serve at 5-4 in the decider.

The Russian has a colossal left-handed serve - smoked 30 aces during the match. But from watching the match, he seems to be a bit of a headcase which is probably why he's not ranked higher. Seemed to be on the verge on imploding a number of times late in the decider, while Ali stayed very calm and composed and played a super solid tiebreak - including one brilliant bit of relex volleying to go 4-2 up.

Great win!

Possibly - although if he'd been losing easily I don't think it would have been the same

But, as Sheddie said, I think he's a bloke that gets very annoyed about a lot of things in life smile

Ali G's volley that Sheddie mentioned in the TB absolutely did his head in biggrin

Russia seems to have a decent line in angry, head cases, on the tennis tour!
