Jay lost the first set 4-6

He's getting himself caught out in whether to attack (a lot of Faurel's balls are very attackable) or whether to wait for the mistake (Faurel makes a fair few)

And by dithering rather, he's given the French youngster a bit of conifdence, and he's swinging more cleanly now

I've often felt that one of the limitations with Jay's game is that he's just too passive. It's enough to win 25ks in the ITFs, but to get into the top 150 and beyond, he needs to go after the ball more and try to dominate

 Completely agree

It's one of the reasons I'm never been a fan of his tennis

He's a strong, well-built player - but he spends most of his time pushing the ball from left to right, often leaving it half way up the court

With his physique, leg power, forearms etc, he should be getting a lot more pace and zip on the ball

But it's in his head - he broke back for 3-3 in the second set, get the youngster wondering, make him tighten up a bit, and then Jay missed all his first serves and just hit the ball at a nice height somewhere in the middle of the court

Toby lost the first set, 5-7

Not much he did wrong there

A few too many slightly wild forehands

But close

Hope he re-sets and goes again

Definitely. I've watched quite a few Jay matches this year and it's been frustrating at times. You can see the physicality is there - he's a great athlete and moves really well, and he's got a decent net game. But it's just safety first tennis a lot of the time, and he seems to be quite willing to just defend and hope that the other guy misses.

And Toby did re-set and go again

A gutsy second set there, which Toby wins, 6-3

All credit to him - the crowd are on Goffin's side

Allez, Toby !

Shame it was a DF for the final point (well, not too much of a shame, we'll take it )

But Toby played SO well - it wasn't easy

Hit some key lines, with brave forehands

And Goffin's legs seemed to have gone in the final game - partly physical but I don't think he could believe a couple of Samuel's shots in the previous game - it took the stuffing right out of him

Toby's 'last-RG-ever' tribute to Goffin wasn't the best - but it's not easy to think on your feet like that

That was a stunning performance for someone with so little clay court experience
Really excited to see Toby on the grass as well.

 Yes

I think, short of falling over his first blade of grass, Toby has sewn up his MD Wimbly wildcard (if it ever were in doubt - coz there's a fair number of postulants)

Rising to the occasion like he did would be a key part of giving wildcards, for me.

Brave performance, kept the belief, defended break points well in some long games and all despite the crowd backing Goffin. Well done Toby - a good match to watch and exciting prospect for the rest of this season.

stevemcqueen - have you tried this link?

https://en14.sportplus.live/tennis/.

Works for me but a bit unreliable. Often have to refresh or change which option works best - 2 has been more consistent for me this week.

Fabulous - well done Toby. Looking forward to seeing him on grass as well. But first, little matter of the FQR
