Toby loses the first set 4-6

A very decent first set

Lots of good serving, solid groundshots, coming to the net

Really sure of himself out there

Alex just squeezed a break when he could, and then held on

The score is fair

But Toby should be pleased with his level and composure during that set

I thought Toby gave a fantastic account of himself and his tennis today. Alex did what Alex does - incredible consistency, court coverage and speed. Really promising for Toby though, and how exciting for him to achieve qualifying for a grand slam and play so well knowing you have the grass court season ahead of you.

He may have been in pain from the rib injury reported earlier.

L128:  Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (PAR) WR 71 defeated (20) Cameron Norrie WR 24 by 7-6(7) 2-0 retired  cry

Beeb comment:

Cameron Norrie attempts a couple of serves, but he is clearly struggling with his ribs and his breathing.  Such a disappointment for the British number one, who has never previously retired during a Grand Slam match.  hmm

Annabel Croft:

I think Norrie has done the right thing if he is in pain. It's far better not to exacerbate the injury problem and get back to the UK, have rest and treatment on it, and then start building up to Queen's Club and Wimbledon.
