FIFA World Cup 2026 - Canada/Mexico/USA

Re Balogun, I give you from the BBC article:

"Many ( US ) outlets have questioned the way football applies its rules - in terms of having to leave the field of play after a red card, and then being banned for a future match."

It's as if - aww it's all a bit strange to you, the way this soccer business operates and rules that many of you can't really get your heads round ( though essentially the rest of the world understands sent off, leave field, ban ) and have impacted one of your players. Tell you what, we like you, well our FIFA President really likes you and doesn't want to upset your President. So although the other 11 players sent off in this World Cup have served / are serving bans as per these rules, we'll suspend your player's ban. Sorry to have annoyed you media folk and Mr Trump. Loving this 4 quarters by the way and the great TV adverts you guys have.

That was an epic performance. Digging deep, every body on the line, a real Agincourt spirit to that win

It was - managed to stay up to watch it all even with delayed kick off. Bit bleary eyed now but managed 3 hours sleep, haha.

Looking at the Quansah sending off again, i wasnt sure at the time but its clearly a red. although it wasnt intended, his foot sort of rode the ball and went high, but clearly reckless and dangerous. I hope Kier Starmer or Andy Burnham have a hotline with fifa to get it suspended, seems to work a treat!

"The BBC's US media partner CBS News has confirmed that Balogun's reinstatement came after US president Donald Trump called Fifa president Gianni Infantino on Thursday and spoke about the suspension, sources familiar with the call told CBS News."

What are FIFA going to do when the USA actually lose a match and Trump demands a recount? "Find me those missing goals!"

The irony - or is it hypocrisy - that Trump lobbies on behalf of someone who he wants to remove US citizenship from. Or does he now support birthright citizenship?

What and you imagine Trump has any rigid policy structures or ideals?! biggrin

I saw a great meme on X which had the ref holding up his red card to Balogun and then Balogun holding up a card back with a picture of Trump on it - my card Trumps your card, ref!

Nothing about the Balogun / Trump / FIFA / lunatics in charge of the asylum business is great.

See what more if anything happens today and it's very late on.I know but I have been feeling like joining CD in their World Cup boycott.

And I was at the beginning so much for - respect you CD, but no-one or nothing, including Trump and FIFA, is going to stop me at this stage in my life just taking in snd enjoying the football. I love football.

This business is a ****fest.

Yes, I'll probably wilt but it's horrendous.

It is but I am sticking with it - putting this aside, it has been a very good World Cup from a football perspective. And with England one of 12 teams left, got to see them through.

So, FIFA have a) given Trump a peace prize as their version of the Nobel Peace Prize

b) let their star player get off his red card ban

c) we have Trump presenting the World Cup trophy at the end

d) surely more stuff to come, let's see how far up Trump's derriere they can go.

Final 12 then:

France v Morocco

USA or Belgium v Spain or Portugal

******

England v Norway

Argentina or Egypt v Colombia or Switzerland

----------

Got to say, would love a France v Spain and England v Argentina set of semis, would that be asking too much?

7 European teams, 2 African, 2 South American and the USA.

UEFA's at least had the guts to condemn FIFA's action vis-à-vis the Balogun red card:

Yesterday's decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line.  Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition. Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations, which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension.

When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined. Equally, such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require an equal treatment, to the detriment of the competition.

Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws. A tournament is never a pure standalone and, if the tournament in question is the World Cup, it has the power to drive positive or negative consequences on the game as a whole.

We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.

While welcome that is unsurprising. UEFA and FIFA are often at loggerhesds and clearly this is directly impacting a UEFA member in Belgium.

The FA is apparently considering appealing against the red card dished out to Jarell Quansah in the early hours of this morning.  Rightly so.  Can't believe the brass neck of Trump.  Political meddler supreme!  Does he even know what constitutes a foul in football (spelt out to him in words of one syllable)?  Even if he does, Quansah's was nowhere near as bad as Balogun's.  furious
