And some very important ranking points for him in the quest to get his ranking high enough for direct entry to the US Open. The bit of today's match that I saw was very impressive.
I was at a very sweltering Eastbourne today. Annoyingly the tournament continues its habit of sticking the majority of British matches on Court 1 (note to the organisers - the people who attend Eastbourne are not the ATP Queen's contingent - they're the tennis diehards. If there's British interest, the people who buy Centre Court tickets expect to see them).
So rather than watch Ostapenko, I ended up stood at the end of Court 1, peering through the gate (which was actually a very decent view) to watch Toby.
Was rewarded with a great match. As he showed against Fery, J. Cerundolo is highly comfortable on the grass, just like his brother. Some wonderful touches around the net which proved quite a menace combined with that lethal forehand.
It was a lot closer than the 6-3, 6-4 scoreline might suggest. Cerundolo had many break points and opportunities, Toby kept snuffing them out with some clutch tennis. Served well, and was absolutely electric around the net. Bergs will be tough but as far as ATP semifinals go, it's not a bad draw!
Then went back onto Centre and watched Jack who's clearly moving through the gears as the week goes on. I've seen Diallo in the past and his serve is monstrous, especially on grass, but Jack at times made it look relatively tame. Forgot just how good a returner he is, and his ability to use his power and spin to put the server immediately on the back foot.
Diallo had few answers - he was clearly unsettled by the fact that his serve was coming back with interest so much of the time and didn't have a huge amount else to offer. Tried a few touch shots which failed woefully, and a few bizarre fluffed overheads which I'm more used to seeing on Saturday afternoons at my club.
At one point, Jack looked on course to win 6-1, 6-2, but from 6-1, 2-0, he lost a bit of focus and let Diallo right back into the match. But as soon as he reasserted himself, he won the final 3 games and got the job done.
Humbert looked incredibly impressive against Halys in the final game of the day though. That forehand is enormous. Will be a real step up for Jack.
Sheddie, thanks fo rthe match reports. The media pays absolutely no attention to lower level matches, so tennis cognoscenti such as ourselves do appreciate insight into matches that fellow board members can share
I totally understand your chagrin re. poor scheduling. I think there are two quite separate groups of people they are attempting to cater for: Wimbledon fans (which includes other UK grass court events) and tennis fans and these two groups are distinct. Very, very few Wimbledon fans follow tennis though the rest of the year. A pet hate of mine is commentary targetted at Wimbledon fans, the majority of whom have littl eunderstanding of the game. I would pay extra to watch UK grass court events without the commentary. I enjoy watching Challenger events on line no commentary at all!
Who are the two BBC commentators for this Toby semi? One British and one American?
I think it's a Canadian alongside the Brit and I think the BBC are picking up the feed from the Tennis channel since the commentary is the same
I wish this "Canadian" commentator would just occasionally shut up. There's just too much information. When the players come on to serve he should be quiet so we can watch without distractions.
