I agree with PaulM that Hannah's attitude was very good (especially in comparison with some other matches)

And the key thing, for me, was that she was really winning points with good tennis

She couldn't do enough of them, and there were afew more errors than you'd like

But she was constructing good points, working them, hitting winners, she looked very much in the match

(Unlike Alicia, say, who has a similar score but who was always behind and you felt that Parks had it wrapped up, short of an earthquake)

Mimi played well too - but should have done better in the first, IMO - she had a LOT of chances and could really have rattled Kasatkina - as it was, Kasatkina admittedly lost the second when Mimi was relaxed and going for it, but you always thought that she'd re-focus

Mika's, on the other hand, was a bit weird

You just think they still have much to learn, but I am expecting at least one of them to be in round two next year.

Harriet seemed to be troubling Ostapenko with mid length low sliced balls, time and time again Ostapenko came in to drive the ball and drove it into the net. Harriet stopped doing it at the end which maybe made the difference.

So if the Francesca Jones match finishes and she loses (as is looking increasingly likely) that means it's been a very bad day for the Brits. Unless I've missed a match somewhere we haven't had a single victory among the men or the women today. Here's hoping for better fortune tomorrow.

Nothing missed JPJ is playing but losing 2-0 and on serve 3-2 third set! I would agree very disappointing... bad draws and injuries to our best apart still disappointing day.

Fran loses 6-4 6-4

Thought she did about as well as she can on grass with her game and current form. Parry just a better player.

So yeah, that's 0 wins across men's and women's. Feels like we are back in the early 00s again with this 'success' rate, ha!

I think we all hope for  one little bit of magic and an unexpected victory. Doesnt help with Jack out now. Nevermind, always tomorrow!

I think its pretty embarrassing that we havent had a single victory on the first day of Wimbledon even though many of the players were underdogs and we had injuries. Its not a good look that all 10 British players lost on opening day and the 11th is 2 games from defeat

Thats not a slight or criticism of the players performances today, its just a sorry state of affairs we havent had a single R1 winner yet

It's all luck of the draw. The group that lost today probably 3 or 4 of those girls could have picked up wins against other opponents. I've genuinely never seen a worse set of draws against unseeded players (plus Mika getting Bencic).

Yes, the day has far from gone as we would want.

It is still June though and during the rest of this month there have been many very good British performances, resulting in no less than 19 contenders for June Player of the Month.

Cheer yourselves up a little by going to the voting thread, with the narratives acting as a reminder, and then go and cast your vote for your June PoM.

Unfortunately Katie B has not done as well in previous Wimbledon's as we would expect. Maybe this year but its a huge ask for her as probably the only player left expected to win (in singles).

That's a good score for Fran, despite it being a loss.

It doesnt help when your better players aren't here - Emma, Sonay, Jack. Only Cam & Katie B in top 60 playing...
